Biography
| The King and his daughter were traveling alone when they came to the ruins of a small old castle in the Tangled Wood. It was overrun by trees and thorns. Anna, ever curious, was eager to explore, and it was getting quite late, so her father decided it might be worth investigating as a shelter for the evening. They found it guarded by a single old nature mirror, who invited them inside. The mirror was friendly and welcoming to them, as he did not often get much company. |
They slept and went on their way in the morning, and the mirror made them promise to return on the way back, and they did.
When they returned, however, they were not greeted by any hospitality. The nature mirror instead used the intervening time to set traps for them, as he despised plague and any dragon who would willingly make their home in the Scarred Wasteland. He was old and clever, as he had long grown accustomed to the shadows and the beguiling nature of the Tangled Wood. He used its trickery to befuddle the skydancer's senses.
The king was quick and clever, and although he managed to defeat the mirror's traps and get his daughter away from danger, she had been injured during the night of strife within the castle. The two fled away from the cursed place, the old mirror's taunting laughter at their heels.
The king promised to return one final time to the castle, but he told not his daughter, nor the old mirror. After returning his daughter home, he went back.
The castle is no more. Nothing except for a few sun-scorched stones remain of the foundation. The surrounding trees withered and turned away from the site, an open wound left in the canopy. The old mirror is long gone too. No trace remains of his existence in the forest.
No one in the clan, not even the king's daughter, knows the origin of the twisted mirror-thing he keeps as a pet. It serves him with absolute loyalty. Flesh and bone carefully molded to the king's preference, and able to be changed on a whim. Its green eyes look to the king with a pathetic combination of hatred and love.
The king left it with enough of its mind intact to mourn the loss of its former self. To understand that something horrid had befallen it, but not what and not why. Sometimes it dreams of the forest, and that is the worst punishment of all.
