Biography

Anyanwu

The dragon in the iron mask

S5N09mY.jpg

They all agreed the experiment had gone wrong.

Terribly wrong.

They could still hear the screams, distorted by the thick metal, and the sizzling from burning feathers and scales. The terrible smell of burning flesh. But that was not the worst memory that haunted them.

It was the silence that came afterwards.

That terrifying absence of any living sound from the glowing mask. He was still alive in there, or at least -something- was still alive in there. Something that moved the heavy, smouldering iron plates over the singed wings, something that slowly turned the mask to follow them as they walked past. But it never spoke, nor answered when spoken to.

The leaders of the clan were furious when they found out about the experiment and only Paeve's intervention stopped them from chasing the gang of conspirators out of the clan. She said their time to leave had not yet come, that they still served a purpose. They were allowed to stay, but their punishments were harsh and they were stripped of most of their privileges for a very long time. None of them ever dared setting foot in the smithy again.

The clan tried to remove the mask from the coatl's head, but found that it was firmly welded into place and none of their tools could wedge it apart even the slightest. They had to give up their efforts. And when it came down to it, no one really wanted to know what was really left behind those glowing slits.

The clan contemplated killing the mask, to end it and whatever suffering it surely must endure. It seemed mindless; it slept only when told to sleep, ate only when told to eat, left the forge only when told to left the forge. All it ever did on its own accord was swinging the heavy hammers and shaping the glowing metal.

And while none of them wanted to say it, the mask was good to have around. Its pounding hammer never stopped, the roaring fire in the forge never died out, it needed no breaks. The clan had never been as well equipped, nor as wealthy as they became from selling the access. And the mask seemed... content in its mindless world. Perhaps the most merciful thing was to leave it alone, after all?

But the mask was not mindless. It was waiting.

Mate: Mara

Familiar: Spirit of fire (changing)

Abilities: Control of fire, blacksmithing

Personality: N/A

Background:
Born in Ice flight, Anyanwu's first and only truly rebellious and reckless act was to hide in a crate of a passing band of merchants to escape the cold south and become a blacksmith in the Ashland Waste. That dream nearly shattered when the beastclan merchants found the hiding coatl hatchling and threw him out in Wind territory instead, but fortunately he was found by a small clan and was accepted as an apprentice to their resident blacksmith.

After learning everything he could from his master, Anyanwu left his new friends and wandered on, training briefly for the masters at the Great Furnace before getting hired by clan Silverfields in Light territory. The coatl finally felt at home in the bustling clan and he settled in, tending his smithy diligently and fathering quite a few offspring over time. He was well-liked by pretty much everyone and life seemed pretty set for him.

Then one day a couple of magicians and scientists proposed an experiment involving an iron mask supposedly infused with the power of the Flamecaller. A mask that would enhance Anyanwu's firebending abilities tenfold.

Believing they were exaggerating and seeing no harm in humouring them, Anyanwu agreed to let them test the mask on him...
