Biography

Baldur is the Norse god of light, innocence, beauty, joy, purity and peace. He is the shining hero among the gods. Baldur is treasured as the ‘best’, ‘brightest’, and most beautiful of all gods. He married the goddess, Nanna, and was father to Forseti.

Baldur is so loved that his mother, Frigga, pleads with all things in existence to agree to never harm Baldur. Unfortunately, she forgets to get this agreement from the lowly mistletoe plant.

Because Baldur cannot be harmed, all of the other gods think it is great fun to shoot arrows and other weapons at him, to watch them bounce uselessly off of him.

Loki is extremely jealous that Baldur is so beloved and also that he is impervious to harm.
Loki tricks Hodr, who is blind, into killing Baldur by helping to guide Hodr's hand in shooting an arrow made of mistletoe into Baldur's heart.
Odin, Baldur's father, is so enraged by Baldur's death that he sires a new son, Vali, whose sole purpose in life is to avenge Baldur's death by killing Hodr. Vali immediately accomplishes his task by growing to adulthood in one day and killing Hodr by the end of that day.

Frigga is so distraught over the loss of her son that she asks if a brave messenger will travel to Helheim (Norse version of hell), to see if Hel, Queen of the dead, will release Baldur. Hermod agrees, and brings back a message from Hel: If all beings will weep for Baldur, Hel will release him back to the land of the living. Hermod takes this message throughout the land and all weep for Baldur....except for one giantess named Tokk. Tokk refuses to weep and says "Let Hel hold what she has". Little does everyone know, but Tokk is none other than Loki in disguise.
