The reborn king of an ancient people, Maharaja has been hiding in the motley Clan of Pan since shortly after he hatched in the Sunbeam Ruins. Having been smuggled away while barely out of the shell, along with his sister Rani, he has never met either of his parents and knows only what his caretakers told him -- which was precious little. Only that generation upon generation of careful breeding, intended to maintain his illustrious ancestor's bloodline, finally reached its fruition when he hatched. He was showered with silks and rose petals from his very earliest memory, and knows no other life.

Among the clan, he is regarded with gentle curiosity; they are an odd bunch, after all, and he's hardly stranger than most. But his casually haughty attitude has ruffled feathers on occasion, so most of his clanmates avoid his company. His mate, Rama, intended for him from before his birth, was his only regular companion. When she was called to serve Windsinger, he knew pain for the first time in his life. He has dwelt alone at the outskirts of the clan since she departed, and now contemplates the unthinkable: running away.
