STORY
Though Patroclus struggled to use his Seer abilities, from a young age he was adamant that it wasn't because he lacked the talent for his parents' art. His visions weren't weak, it felt like, but rather dim – like a light seen from far away, or through thick foliage. Perhaps the stars were not for him, but if he could just find what was, if he could only get closer, then he would finally see what his visions were trying to show him clearly.
Though he traveled up and down the continent, felt the powers of the flights wax and wane around him and the pressure of the stars shine constantly from above, still nothing he found could strengthen his visions. He stared into the mirror-still pools deep within glaciers, the pure-white flickers at the centers of the hottest flames, tried to divine from the ripped-out innards of many-eyed birds and the patterns of sunbeams on weathered ancient marble, stood at the needle-thin peaks of ragged cliffs to listen to the wind and dug his claws into the living soil between the roots of Guardian-length thick trees to feel the slow heartbeat of forests from before the age of dragons – still only the flicker of visions just out of his reach, and always the stars watching judgingly from overhead. By the time his journey took him back around to the Tangled Wood, he feared he would have to face the truth: that he was wrong, that the problem was never with the power he was taught to use. That he just... couldn't do it. As the twisted canopy above covered the stars, it felt like admitting defeat. In the winding tunnels and caverns of a lair by the side of one of the river deltas of the Driftwood Drag, Patroclus felt something other than the power the Shadowbinder leaves for her children. Though his visions are dimmer than ever, the shifting and coiling of indistinct shapes against the absence of light, still he can hear it, even up above under the weak sunlight that catches on the river. There are no stars here, but something wants him still. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ |
