“Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.” - Dragon Victor Hugo

Being children of Light, all Imperial mothers and fathers tell the history of their breed to their young whenever they are old enough to hear it and understand it. Illuminati was no different at that. He remembers that day, and holds the memory close to his heart. He clearly remembers the dismay at having learned that their grand species, the first children of Light, had been cursed and replaced.

And, he clearly remembers, having denied that notion.

As a young imperial, Illuminati packed his things. He kissed his mother’s cheek, and waved his father goodbye, as he left his old clan in search of the truth. He wrote letters to his clan each week, telling them of his findings. The Sunbeam Ruins was a huge territory, and that was the first thing he had found in his journey. However, no matter how big the ruins were, with all their cities and inhabitants, the Beacon of the Radiant Eye was always visible… and so was their creator, the Lightweaver, always curled around the Beacon, but always watching the sea and never her land. That was his destination.

Illuminati much preferred to walk on foot. On the air, things passed by too quickly. There was only the blue above and the green below. On the ground, however, Illuminati saw that he could enjoy his journey. He made friends and acquaintances with many dragons. He stayed in many clans during the days where he couldn’t keep walking. On some days, he offered his services in order to win enough treasure to eat something. That’s another memory he remembers, the first time he worked as a bookkeeper.

It was on a small clan that lived in one of those libraries of the Hewn City. The library had been built into the ruins of an old, human one. The space had been too big for the clan, and thus they opened their library to the public in order to fill the emptiness that was felt in it. That’s how Illuminati found himself entering the simple library… and knocking the first book stack there was with his tail. The elderly Snapper operating the library was soon on his hide about it.

“Young man, you better pick that up!” Bellowed the Snapper in all her seven meter glory. Illuminati quickly picked up the books, and stacked them once again.

“I’m sorry, I-” But Illuminati never got to finish, as the Snapper had begun to give him other tasks. Illuminati had been too nice back then to say no--and he was still too nice now if that ever happened again.

Turns out, Illuminati had ruined one of the books, and to pay for it he had to work in the library. At first, he found it annoying--he was on a journey, and didn’t have time to stop and work. Over time, he found that he had all the time in the world, and that he very much liked working with books. The Snapper lady softened up to him over time, and showed him the tricks of managing a library. Binding books, cleaning the pages, organizing by authors… Illuminati felt he was taking care of thousands of little universes, each trusting him to do his best.

Soon, however, he was forced out of the library. The Pearlcatcher customers had stopped coming in, due to finding uncomfortable being next to an overly bright and golden Imperial as he. Rumors had started to run through the grapevines about the humble library. With pain in her eyes, the Snapper told Illuminati to leave.

The nights after that had been a bit hard for Illuminati. The Beacon, with the Lightweaver’s glowing appendages, had begun to feel as if it were mocking him. On one occasion, even, Illuminati saw how the normally stoic form of the large, serpentine aspect of Light moved her entire form to look over her land. Illuminati felt the weight of her eerie, silent attention as her two, glowing eyes settled on him. The moment soon passed, she was back to overseeing the sea as if nothing had ever happened. After that time, Illuminati tried harder to find a clan that could hide him during the nights.

During his journey, Illuminati saw that he also liked helping and teaching others--mostly other Light dragons that had trouble feeling attached to their flight. Even though he didn’t stay long in one place, he tried his best to teach the others how to connect with their element. All Light dragons had an interest, however small, in philosophy and knowledge (as well as shiny things). Illuminati used this to connect those dragons--help them find the wonders of the unknown.

It was during one of these lectures, out in the open under a tree with a few hatchlings of various clans, that he found Chayyliel--or, well, Chayyliel found him. The Arcane Ridgeback silently walked over to the gathering of hatchlings, and sat down behind them as silently as she could. It wasn’t silent enough, as all the hatchlings that had been paying rapt attention to Illuminati were now checking behind them. As soon as they saw Chayyliel, they all jumped on her--the lesson long forgotten. Illuminati felt his eye twitch as he lowered his hands, which he had been using to explain how the Sundial worked.

“Um, excuse me ma’am, but who are you?” Asked Illuminati as he tried to get the Ridgebacks’s attention. She was busy play-fighting with the other hatchlings, but one hatchling heard the Imperial and was soon overtaken with horror.

“You don’t know who Chayy is!?” Screeched the hatchling. The other hatchlings stopped playing with the Ridgeback, and were staring at Illuminati in horror at his ignorance. Illuminati took a few steps back, feeling indignity. The Ridgeback looked at him, and at the other hatchlings. Just as another was about to launch into a reverent explanation, the Ridgeback stood up and shook the hatchlings off.

“Alright, that’s enough! Aren’t you guys supposed to be with your clans anyways? C’mon, shoo, y’all can come back tomorrow!” Said the Ridgeback, nudging the hatchlings in their clan’s direction. The hatchlings groaned, but said their goodbyes before leaving. This left both adult dragons alone.

“I’m so sorry about that! I really liked your talk--really! That’s why I came over, and sat down--I tried to be quiet! Still, the darned ******** still found me! Again, I’m soooo sorry! I can offer you another time to teach these kids, if that sweetens the situation! I also give classes some days--you can take over one!” Said the Ridgeback with a sheepish smile.

“Wait, what? You teach? No, before that, who are you?” Asked Illuminati. The Ridgeback sat down on front of him.

“I’m Chayyliel! Resident warrior and trainer! I teach the kids how to fight when they are old enough! If they want to serve the Lightweaver, I also give them classes on how to do so correctly! And to whom am I making the acquaintance to…?” Said Chayyliel, extending her hand.

“Illuminati,” Said the Imperial, shaking Chayyliel’s hand.

“Nice to meet ya, Illuminati!” Said Chayyliel merrily.

“So, you said you taught?” Asked Illuminati.

Like that, Illuminati had made another friend in Chayyliel. That’s how he ended up in the Stormcrown Laboratories. Chayyliel had offered him a place as a bookkeeper of the Laboratory’s massive library. The fact that the clan was making the arrangements to move to the Beacon certainly sweetened the pot to Illuminati. Even if he had settled down, he was still doing his journey. At one point, the Matriarch of the clan made him Ambassador to the Light Flight, due to his journey making him well known throughout the flight.

Soon enough, he would be able to talk to the Lightweaver and find the truth about his breed.
