Biography

141mknq.jpg
Virosa had been walking for so long, she couldn’t remember anything else. Every time her pace slowed, a voice yelled ‘walk!’ And she was shoved forward, stumbling.

Virosa tried to focus on the faint grasp of time she had left-
There was day, in which the ground beneath her feet was present and pulsing,
And night, when everything became a dark void of secrets.

The further the group travelled, the hotter the air became - the more filled Virosa’s lungs felt with the thickness of eternal rot.
The group consisted of her two siblings, Virosa, and an adult mirror that she instinctively referred to as ‘mother’.
Virosa didn’t particularly like any of them.

-

After what could easily have been decades of travel, the hazy, endless horizon suddenly jagged with a knotted, grey mess of fauna.

Virosa’s body buzzed with anticipation as mother turned, grinning, and declared;
‘This is where we part! The three of you must set yourselves around the rim. This is a game of survival- of expectance. You have twenty three days.’
And that was the last the trio heard from her before she hobbled off in sickly grace into the Beyond.

-

Night was setting upon the young siblings with haste. A familiar chill ran up Virosa’s spine.
‘Shall we wait?’ Her sister suggested.
And so they did. As siblings, the three sat a sleepy vigil through the night.

-

As the sun rose to muddy the grey morning sky, Virosa felt a great loneliness fall over her.
She looked to her brother and sister, watching their sides rise and fall in quiet rhythm and matching it to her own breathing. This was it.
Virosa took the pattern of her kin and held it to her chest like a flame.

And then she left to the meet the rim.

-

It welcomed her like an old friend-
Great, thorny tendrils sweeping over her flank and caressing her wings.
Virosa clambered up the wall of alien life quickly, reaching the top within minutes. She perched herself on the highest peak, eyes finally settling on the Wound.

Day 1
1 wrote:
The pool was perhaps the most entrancing thing Virosa had ever seen. It was never truly still, constantly bubbling with toxic fury. Every few minutes, a sudden wave of anger would erupt from it, splashing disease-born acid that met the surrounding area with a sickening fizz. The ground that came in contact with the liquid formed into an array of dips and pools, creating a whole oceanic network of pulsing, writhing sickness.

Day 3
3 wrote:
Something was happening beneath Virosa’s skin. It was a pain like the tide- sometimes rising so high that every fibre of her body screamed with pain. Other times, it was barely there- just a dull, receding throb; ever persistent no matter how subdued.

Day 7
7 wrote:
There was no rest from the agony now. Boils split from Virosa’s hide only to burst at the slightest movement. Her body’s wet with fever and blood. When she cries, the tears are a thick yellow.

Day 10
10 wrote:
Virosa screams a throaty plea into the skies above. There is no answer. She decides she must answer herself.

Day 15
15 wrote:
Virosa decides to stop laying around waiting for death. She stands for the first time in days. Theres a thick, woody stem of something grey that she bites open and drinks from. The sap is so sweet it instantly envelopes her teeth with rot. Virosa doesn’t mind; they were rotting anyway.

Day 19
19 wrote:
After fear, sorrow, pain, and fury, Virosa finds peace. The rot wraps her like a warm blanket. On the 19th day, she coughs up a splintered bone. Virosa doesn’t remember eating anything. This is a sign, surely. Virosa tries to remember her mother, but only the image of a towering, thunderous beast of pain and survival comes to mind. This is Mother now.

Day 22
22 wrote:
Virosa’s claws run hot with newfound power. Her wings hum with untapped strength. She looks backs to the wyrmwound and dips her head in thanks. She must move now, onwards.

Day 23
23 wrote:
Virosa hasn’t travelled far when something charges at her from behind - a beast many times larger then the adolescent mirror. Its tusks could easily split her in two, but Virosa isn’t afraid. No, she’s already faced death, fought it, and won.
She lets the thing come.
It runs fast enough to blur, screaming throaty threats in a language Virosa can’t quite understand.
As it nears, Virosa lunges forward and sinks her claws into its neck. The monsters hide is thick, but she scrapes its flesh- just barely.
Virosa propels herself off and lands to the side, panting.

The transformation happens all at once.
The mighty thing falls to the ground, howling in pain- its white tusks are enveloped in a tar-like substance, and its skin appears to buckle and fray.
It bleeds green, stream rising off its wounds in some sort of ungodly spectacle.
The creature bucks and writhes, throwing dust and gore into the air as it screams for mercy.
Virosa watches on, wordlessly, until its struggles wear to nothing and it lays still, nostrils flared and sides heaving with effort.
Finally, she moves forward and reaches out, talons grazing the minuscule scratches from her attack.

Theres a silence in which neither Virosa nor the monster appear to breathe at all, then it suddenly flings itself to its feet, head flung about in panic.
Its fur grows like a wave, covering the hundreds of wounds across its sides. The monster seems instantly calmed.

Itscold eyes meet Virosa’s,
And the strange beast bows.
