“I have had a vision, one so great that I can barely withstand the weight of it. So I will write what I have seen, what I have learned, although I know to speak of it would surely bring doom upon me. I know not what else can be done. Long ago, when the spires of the Second Age shone bright against the sky, there was an empire. Our land that would come to be called Sornieth prospered, and this kingdom prospered alongside it. Now, this empire was not populated by dragonkind, but strange beings that stood on two feet, their heads held high and their blood running with the magic of the same primordial chaos that shaped their land. But these curious people walked with us, traded goods and words and wisdom. Those who had the fortune of visiting their kingdom returned with tales of wondrous sights - palaces made from sunlight and moonlight, enchanted statues that seemed to live and breathe, flora the likes of which none of us had ever seen, cascading waterfalls that could cleanse not only the body but the soul, houses built among the clouds, energy that could never be extinguished. They had their own gods, we were told, powers outside of the Pillar we worshiped. It was a place of mystery, though, one we never understood fully. Its denizens called it Congrega Insulae - in our tongue, the Gathered Isles. Then came the cataclysm that ended the Second Age. Our own empire fell into dust, and slowly rose again to create the Sornieth we know today. But as the Eight awakened, yet to create dragonkind, Chaos came to them. Chaos, the mother of the Isles and sister to the Eight - for they all had been born from the same great void - scorned them. “I WATCHED AS YOU FORSOOK YOUR CHILDREN,” she said. “I WATCHED AS YOU ALLOWED THEIR HUBRIS TO CONSUME THEM, TO CREATE WITH THEIR OWN HANDS THE THING THAT WOULD DESTROY THEM.” She turned to the Arcanist. “AND THIS ONE, YOU ALLOWED TO CALL DOWN THAT DARKNESS YOU ONCE FOUGHT SO HARD TO BANISH. YOU ALLOWED HIM TO RUN RAMPANT LIKE A LOST CHILD. WHAT GODS ARE YOU, THAT YOU WOULD DO SUCH THINGS?” The Eight did not wish to listen to her words. “AND WHO ARE YOU TO CHASTISE US, LITTLE SISTER? THAT SHADE THAT LURKS EVEN STILL HAS INFECTED YOUR THOUGHTS, AND WE WILL NOT HEED YOU ANY LONGER. LET YOUR KINGDOM BE CAST AWAY FROM OURS, LET IT SHATTER AND DRIFT IN THE BOUNDLESS OCEAN. LET YOUR CHILDREN LOSE THEIR WAY. BEGONE FROM US.” And thus the Gathered Isles became the Drifting Isles, a once-glorious empire cast adrift on the eternal waves that surround us. They have become lost to us, and perhaps even to themselves. But those mist-cloaked mirages that can be seen from the shore are very, very real.” - Excerpt from a journal found with the body of a dragon washed ashore on the Isle of Eclypsium. |
