"Kindness is the greatest virtue one can have. I'll always reward those who bear it openly."

Tucked away in an old chapel, a pale white gold statuette sits. From the cornucopia held in her arms pours an endless stream of what many consider a fog of peace and calm. Those who breath it are greeted by a pale beast of many eyes, asking them to share their heart with her. Those who mean well find themselves in a garden, their worries melted away like morning dew. Those who don't never wake, forever lost in the vines and flowers as they slowly swallow them whole.

This is the tale of the Barghest, Salma.

Hor-divider-640.png
A silver figure shifts in the moonlight, her eyes flicking over the offerings left behind today. Every full moon was the promise, in the end. Every full moon, the best of each gathering run would be left behind. The cleanest metals and stones, the strongest of the wooden planks, and the most unblemished of every hunt would be left for her. The best of the cleanest catch, the freshest of the foraged plants, the largest of the fish, and the juiciest bug would be offered up.

This moon was different. They needed more plants, so they spared the best of the best for this moon. The rest were the usual, just fragments of stone and the usual cuts from the hunting trips. The flowers, however, were overflowing the bowls and vases. She'd had to pick some off of herself in the end, even if they were nice. She desperately wanted to burn some, to fill her pocket of the cathedral with incense that would remind the elders of their old home. Tonight, however, there was something more she had to do.

The figure took some of the flowers, setting them around four silver lumps in the bowl. She'd rinsed them in the water of the nearby river where the fish had been caught. She'd made them of the metal gathered, fused with blood from the hunt to strengthen their bond. The fires that melted them down were fueled by some of the sticks from scavenging, and put out by sands from digging. Even the bugs had a use, their carapaces ground into the dirt to set the four orbs. The extra flowers would decorate the bowl and the silver stones, or perhaps they were just metal. No matter what they were, there was one thing that could be said about them. They were hers. Hers, and one other's.

She looked up, nodding to the figure across from her. Robes, drapes, pale in hue with feathered wings to rival a garden of roses. She stepped back, letting the feathered beast approach with his chalice of rose gold and his wisdom. It was the last part, the last thing between them this full moon. He'd taught her the rites, the little things needed to feed without taking the lives of their followers. To let them hunt and gather as they pleased, while only skimming their many dreams every night. They were beasts, monsters that fed off of others, but they didn't have to be. He helped her become that, and she hoped he could help there be more beasts like them in the world.

She watched him wash the four silver stones with his chalice, watched him etch runes into their surfaces, and waited. The full moon was what they all needed according to every one of the Barghests who lived in this place. As the moonlight bathed over the bowl, she came to realize just how right they were. Four silver orbs shone, then slowly began to shift and uncurl into four little fluffy shapes.

The fourth of the nest was of pure white gold, so similar to her father, clutching a cornucopia as pale as her fur. The statuette shifted in her dress, her veil of flowers and petals, and settled nearby. Her mother gave the masses plenty when they asked. She'd do something even better for them. Wishes, desires, all would come to them with the same ease as the perfume of her flowers. She'd ensure their minds would forever find peace at night so long as their hearts are clear of malice.
