Specifically, she burned the fears of the petitioners that came to her, until it realized that with fearlessness came recklessness and stupidity. It answered fewer and fewer prayers until the only fear it would burn away was her own. It believed it was the only one who could be trusted to still act rationally without fear: after all, she’d seen the effects first hand. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that. She became just as reckless as anyone else and too brave to notice. It grew away from its family, leaving for long stretches of time to travel around playing music, getting into fights, and living off of the boons she granted herself with her fear. Danger didn’t phase her, it only made her magic stronger. On her travels she came to a strangely empty stretch of woods. All the houses along the path appeared to have been hastily abandoned, but Votive wasn’t phased. It was just happy to have a comfortable bed to sleep in. That night, she had dreamed of performing in court for a faceless patron. It applauded her attempt, but made it clear she hadn’t gotten it quite right. These dreams continued, and every night, even when she played the notes perfectly, it wasn’t right. Even in the daytime she’d practice, trying to find what she was missing in her performance. One day, as she walked deeper into the woods playing the song, she realized the woods was playing a duet with her. The birds, the wind, the rustling leaves and babbling brooks all sang that same song. She played her heart out, following the sounds off the path until she came to a great mossy deer. Finally, it saw the patron from its dreams. Finally, it played the song correctly: perfect notes weren’t enough, she needed to play with emotion. It needed to play with fear. Votive hasn’t quite found its way out of the woods, even once she found the path again it doesn’t seem to be leading it the right way. But that’s alright, it has everything it could ever need right here.
