"The Spiral is one of the Entities. It is based on the fear of madness, that your world isn’t right, that your mind is lying to you. It deals with deception, lying, deceiving the mind and senses. The Spiral is associated with fractal patterns, hallucinations, doubt of sanity, impossible geometry, maddening realms and dimensions, doors and mazes."
The Spiral's artefacts are the following: • The Fractal Pot: A Chinese, Jiajing-era ceramic pot decorated in crisp geometric blue lines that repeat perfectly even as they grow smaller and denser. It takes things from its owner, along with all memories and evidence of those things, save the memories of its owner. It may be the residence of a being of the Spiral rather than an artefact itself, as one of its victims witness long, thin fingers with dirty nails emerge from the interior. • The Pattern Rug: A rug with a pattern separate from this being. The pattern can remove itself from the rug and flow across other things in a mess of diamonds, swirls, and colours, a process that is painful to living creatures and can pull them apart from the inside. |
The Spiral's domains are the following: Wonderland House: it feeds off the fear of abusive mental health treatment and that people are making up or imagining their mental health issues. It takes the form of a mental health institution where patients are continuously subjected to abusive treatment telling them that they are worthless and making up their problems. The Monument: it's also possibly aligned with The Eye and The Vast, preying on those who attempt to categorize the world with themselves at the centre. A "cascading recursion of shifting arrogance and hubristic dead-ends" wherein academics are trapped in an ever-changing maze. The inhabitants come up with elaborate theories as to how to escape the domain, only to have the maze shift to prove them wrong. This is the second domain to seemingly have a purpose outside of just creating fear, acting as a deliberate mockery of humans who attempted to understand the Entities. The Prison: also aligned with The Desolation, The Buried, The Eye and The Lonely. It presumably feeds off of the fear of mistaken arrest and being arrested for something they did not do. Inhabitants alternate between being trapped in a prison cell for prolonged periods of time and experiencing distorted memories of different arrests and abuses. It's implied they are also tormented by the jailers and guards. The Distortion: Feeding on the fear of false friends and deceptive kindness, its the physical form takes the shape of a shifting, confusing hotel whose inhabitants are constantly misled further and further into the halls by the Distortion's current face. The Spiral's Ritual is called The Great Twisting, which was stopped by sacrificing someone to merge with The Distortion. The ritual failed as the unknowable being of The Distortion combined with a knowable being created a paradox. - TMA Wikia |
