As a Kelpdiver, Bee is an herbivore. He enjoys floating along the seabed, grazing on any plants he sees. Bee is extremely skittish and doesn't really trust others.

When he was young, Bee got a little too curious. He heard a loud noise and decided to investigate. But sadly, while searching for the source of the noise, he went to close to the ocean's surface and ended up being hit by a speedboat. He lost his arm and his tail was torn. As a result, Bee became terrified of the surface. He dove back down to the seabed, vowing to never go up again. He also became afraid of other living things, and he will bolt at even the sight of another living creature.

Years later, he is still living in the dark, completely alone. But one day, he's grazing, and comes across a small swimming critter. It turns out to be an extremely territorial critter, as it starts to chase Bee around. Bee ends up swimming right into another Kelpdiver. The other Kelpdiver is overjoyed to see him (as Kelpdivers are social creatures) and instantly tries to befriend him. Poor Bee is terrified and tries to swim away, but the other Kelpdiver happily follows him. After a few hours, the odd Kelpdiver ends up grabbing Bee and dragging him away. To Bee's horror, the other Kelpdiver brings him up to the surface and to a boat. Bee tries to get away, but because he only has one arm, he cannot really do anything. Bee is dragged up to the boat, where the two little Kelpdivers are fished up and placed in the boat. Bee is basically paralyzed with fear at this point. There is one person on the boat with them- a woman by the mane of Aiani. As it turns out, the second Kelpdiver, Tide, is Aiani's pet, and she was just letting him roam for a while. Aiani ends up taking Bee with him back home- where he is put to live with Tide. Tide has a massive personal enclosure- it has a waterslide, multiple islands, some caves and tunnels, trees, and it is mostly water. Aiani is determined to help Bee adjust and live his life happily, fully aware of the fact that Bee is scared of everything. She realizes how isolated Bee was when Tide starts to lick him (as that is how Kelpdivers communicate) and he freaks out.
Bee slowly starts to adjust to his new home and bonds with Tide. Aiani, being a collector of aquatic creatures, has other large enclosures housing dragons, serpents, and other mysterious creatures. Bee eventually starts to lick Tide and Aiani, which shows the both of them that he finally trusts them and has settled in.

But Bee is still scared of snails and no one knows why.

After a year of settling in, Bee becomes very attached to Tide. Aiani also ends up taking in three baby Kelpdivers that were left at her doorstep. Bee immediately tries to get to them, but Aiani keeps them away for a couple of days. Aiani's husband, Maoia, notices that Bee becomes quite agitated when the babies are kept from him, so he stays by Bee until he is allowed to see the babies.
