Biography

The tiny hatchling blinked her little glowing eyes at the first two dragons she saw, watching them excitedly talk about her.

"Oh its so cute, Des, can I keep it?"

"Wh- Aliya, no-! You can barely keep track of Button as it is, you can't take on another hatchling."

The hatchling didn't really know what they were talking about, or what talking was yet, all she knew was her instincts, and her instincts were to be safe next to her parent.

So she crawled her way over, curling up next to the bigger of the two.

The conversation between the other dragons continued even after she fell asleep on his tail.

...

"Okay. Okay- this is fine, I've taken enough classes about hatchlings, I should know how to handle this." Des very much did not know how to handle it, he'd have been pacing back and forth if he could, if it wasn't for the ever so tiny baby sleeping on his tail.

Aliya laughed, "Well, if you know about hatchlings surely you know what kind of dragon it is?" She asked him, but he just shook his head, "I don't... its not- its not a Dusthide, those have claws- the closest thing I can think of is Fathoms, but they left ages ago to look for the Tidelord, so why now would one show up here of all places!? We're not even in the sea-!"

"Hey, hey- Des, chill out, you're gonna wake up the kid." Aliya tried to get him to be quiet, shushing him.

"I don't think I've seen a Fathom in real life before, but I guess it does kinda look like one, huh?" She asked as she looked down at her, the way the glow of her eyes was still faintly visible even while she slept.

Des looked through his notebook again, everything about her looked like a Fathom, but that seemed so impossible. "You're way too calm about this, how are you so calm about this!?"

Much to her brother's dismay, Aliya seemed to act like it was the most normal thing in the world, "We see Obelisks like, all the time, and they were missing for a while too."

"Yes," Des nodded, running a claw through his feathers, "But we didn't hatch one! And besides, I know enough about Fathoms to know that it's likely they... imprint on whoever they see first, which means that likely-"

A gasp cut off the rest of his sentence, "The hatchling thinks you're its dad?" Aliya grinned, but Des just frantically shook his head,

"No, nonono- I'm not fit to be a father-" He tried to protest, he knew that he and his sister weren't terrible with hatchlings, but at the same time, he wasn't meant to be an influence to anyone, especially not to a tiny hatchling, who needed support, and care, and time, and-

He felt a clawed hand on his shoulder, "Hey." Aliya said, trying to stop him from hyperventilating, "You help me take care of Button, you take care of this one too, if you need to."

...

Des still only half believed her words, even the hatchling was old enough to walk and talk and tell him he was doing fine too.

"Des! Des c'mon let's go catch fishies." Mabel dragged him down to the stream that ran through the town, right around where Estelle had first found her as an egg.

He still could never catch up with how fast the kid was, especially when she was swimming- just another thing that made him certain she was a Fathom. "I'm coming, I'm just slow-"

"Well go faster!" She said, reaching one of her hands in and grabbing a fish, instantly gobbling it up.

Des never understood how she was so good at catching them, it wasn't like he'd ever taught the kid any of that- he didn't know how to catch a single fish, he didn't even eat them- still, he was proud of his kid, so he smiled at her, clapping his hands together as he reached the edge of the stream. "Wow, good job Mabel!"

She just grinned, hopping fully into the water as she scooped up another fish, "You wanna join me!?"

"Ah, no thank you, I don't need to get my feathers wet again so soon." Des rejected that idea, swimming with Mabel was fun, but he knew he'd get sick if he did so too often.

"Why can't anyone else in our family swim as much as me anyway? It's not fair..." Mabel crossed her arms with a sigh.

That conversation again, he'd tried to explain to her before the reason, but he always chickened out, "Hon, let me try to explain... the rest of us were all hatched in a nest here, in the Woods." Des said quietly as he gestured around, "You... you weren't. You're from the Sea, you floated down the stream as an egg, and we found you."

Mabel frowned for just a moment, swimming over to the edge of the river. "You... just found me?" She asked, "But I'm... I'm still part of the family, right?"

"Oh Mabel- of course you are. You're just as much a part of the family as me, or Button, or Aliya, got that? Even if you're not from the Woods." He realized she still looked a bit sad, so he continued. "Besides, it means you can breathe underwater, and you can swim fast, you like that stuff, right?"

She just continued staring at the water- she nodded slightly, but still didn't say anything.

"Hey... look at me?" Once he was sure she was listening, he smiled softly, "Mabel, you'll always be my family, okay? No matter what happens, you're my daughter."

Des could barely get the sentence out of his mouth before she jumped out of the water and toppled them both to the ground, his feathers were definitely getting soaked at that point, but he really couldn't bring himself to care, too busy watching the smile on Mabel's tiny face. "Okay, dad."
