"There are things to be learned in the world around us, and above us."

A child created from the dangers of obsession and magicks unknown to many.

Hor-divider-640.png
Obsession in the pursuit of knowledge was often how breakthroughs were made and mysteries were uncovered. Chasing the crumb of evidence until one either found enlightenment and the proof they were looking for or caved into the despair of broken dreams and unsupported hypothesis. Some ended up changed beyond recognition; for better or for worse was always the question in the end.

Gilbert knew all to well the dangers and rewards of chasing obsessions. He’d often cautioned others against the risk, citing examples of times it’d gone wrong for those involved.

And yet ever since he’d encountered the mysterious well at the edge of what was considered Lightning’s territory and reemerged days later with strange hatchlings in tow and only the haziest of memories of his time within the depths…he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about the structure and the mysteries within. The feathers and fur he’d come out of the well with had been stored away until now, just as central in his thoughts as of late as the well itself.

He knew magic was involved somehow but it was not magic in a form he was familiar with. It was not the magic that flowed through his bloodline, nor that of the hell-touched Ignis line. Even those who wielded magic more natural to the world within the Carnivale did not come close to what he had experienced. It was unique, rare, unexplored- and he had to know more. There was an itch, an urge not entirely his own, something surging under his scales that would not let him go until he’d sated his thirst.

It was an urge to understand and create something greater than he could truly imagine. An opportunity for knowledge most mortals would never be graced with.

And he would be a fool to ignore it.

So he didn’t.

For all his preference for science and proper experimentation most assumed that Gilbert hated magic given the way he avoided using it. Now that was simply false and if anyone bothered to ask him he’d happily correct the misconception. He was quite adept with the magic innate in his blood, and had gone out of his way to study and learn other varieties of magic as well, but he simply found it boring. Perhaps it was that it made things too easy or that his own understanding of magic took the mystery out of it for him but it was far more satisfying to simply ‘get his paws dirty’ and do the work himself.

And it was a good thing that he didn’t hate magic because he knew he’d need it. It was also a good thing that the clan had quite the extensive record of well…anything that the clan members came across. While the Carnivale itself was meant to travel across the territories and bring fun and wonder to all those that encountered it, there were plenty of things they learned in turn in their travels. And those who sought out adventure on their own or with friends often brought back new information and news of the world.

And so the library had come to be, journals and notes and scribbled thoughts collected alongside proper scientific papers and whatever interesting books and scrolls were brought back by the adventurers. As such, Gilbert had quite the treasure trove to delve into in search of the information he needed.

He was no stranger to the library so no one batted an eyelid as he disappeared into the depths for days on end. It wasn’t unusual to see one of the more scientifically minded clan members disappear into it and come out spouting things the most random of things that somehow related to the reason they’d gone in. Gil had even done it a few times himself so no one truly thought anything odd of his most recent foray into the shelves.

Which suited Gilbert all the better. He knew his most recent obsession and where his thoughts were leading him wasn’t perhaps the…best of ideas. If anything what he thought he might be unleashing onto the world was *probably* a very bad idea. It likely wasn’t fully his own idea as well- perhaps some aftereffect of the well- but he’d latched onto it and not let go. But that was the thing about obsession when it came to Gilbert…a bad idea didn’t mean it wasn’t a scientific breakthrough.

And he was on the edge of something *amazing*.

It took weeks of delving into the archives of the library until he found what he needed. An old book, speaking of fairytales and legends and the magic woven within in such a way that resonated with what he’d felt within the well. He didn’t understand the connection, yet, and it was not a perfect match, but it was the connecting piece to bridge the gap of all the knowledge he’d collected and suddenly he knew exactly what he needed to do.

He just had until the next full moon to collect and create what was needed and then everything would be ready.

--

The days passed in a haze of seemingly unending work. Magic and hard work came together and as time went by Gilbert got closer and closer to his goal. Bodies were shaped and stitched together; fur and feathers woven into his work and never seeming to run out despited only having a handful at the start. He didn't question it, nor did he question how as the days progressed the lab smelt more and more like wet stone and water- like the well he'd traversed not so long ago.

It was unimportant in the long run.

What was important was the end result and he finished just in time. In his crazed haze he hadn't slept, hardly paused to eat. The occasional visitor had attempted to stop in only to be shooed away before they could get a glimpse inside of the lab. All that mattered was this moment, as the moon rose in full in the night and illuminated the lab through the skylight above. It shone over five metallic tables, beds in Gilbert's twisted view, revealing the forms there in their patchwork glory.

Four were a mess of multiple heads, twists of tails, and a tangle of limbs; those who didn't know any better would call them ‘emperors’. A fool’s interpretation to be sure, but Gilbert would not fault them for the incorrect assumption. Creatures of magic and creation stitched together and given life, true forms bared for any to see on the eve of their creation…and the last, a final form not quite as shocking as his siblings. Still patchwork but created with the scraps, so to say.

Each form was unique and each lay in the moonlight, awaiting the ‘spark’ needed to awaken. And Gilbert was quite ready to provide just that.

His feathered crest raised as he stepped forward, a hissing laugh slipping past as magic gathered at his clawtips. His own transformation over the course of this was quite the boon and something to study later for sure- it wouldn't do to start another project with this one so close to finished already.

And Gilbert always preferred to finish what he started.

As he gathered more magic the smell of well water grew thicker in the air. And when he released the magic he held, channeled it into the bodies before him to the point of exhaustion…he swore he heard the soft ‘plink’ of a coin dropping into water before all went black as days of exhaustion and lack of rest caught up to him; in the same moment the magic took hold and five forms took their first breath.

When Gilbert woke he found himself on the floor, small forms curled up to him much like how it had been after his encounter with the well. He noted, with some hazy amusement, that there were only four curled up with him and that the ‘bed’ of the last had water dripping off it. Something curled at the edge of his senses but disappeared before he could get his wits about him enough to do anything about it.

There was a soft snort and he turned his gaze to the remaining four sleeping peacefully around him, true forms fading away into fox like beasts not unlike the last trio of children that inspired this whole project. He had theories of what happened to the last but he’d still succeed in the end and that was what mattered.

And hopefully this would be the last of these sort of projects from Gilbert…

--

“Oh Gilbert. You have no idea what you've unleashed.”

…As while Gilbert was congratulating himself on a job well done, another was watching him through the aid of magic. Verisai frowned, looking at the image reflecting in the softly glowing waters before her.

“I'm going to have to do something about this…”
