When Katydid was a small hatchling, she yearned to create as others in her clan of Dusthides did. She watched the masters carve beautiful works from stone, and form amazing vessels from the clay. When she made her first little pot, she was beside herself with excitement. She dreamed of the colors she would paint it, when it was fired and ready for glaze. But her first creation was made too thick, and so when she went to collect it the day it was supposed to be ready, she opened the kiln and found not her masterpiece, but an explosion of little pottery shards strewn on the bottom. The dragonet was heartbroken. Her teacher was a kindly dragon, and after wiping away tears and a reassuring hug, he showed her how the tiny pieces could still be painted and formed into something new. Together they glazed the shards and arranged them on a flat, smooth piece of rock, using grout to stick the pieces together in a beautiful pattern. Katydid had made her first mosaic. In her adulthood Katydid remains a warm, encouraging presence in the clan. With Mole's help, she now has a pottery room of her own, where she regularly hosts art workshops for the hatchlings, and any adult dragons who are interested in giving it a try! She enjoys making all manner of ceramic pieces in addition to her mosaic work, and has recently begun dipping her toes into stained glass making, too. Any pieces that break are just more tesserae for her to rework into something new. |
