Chaviv

Chaviv is a flirt.

He can’t help himself, that’s just how he is. He’s never met a dragoness he couldn’t say something heartfelt and meaningful to. He adores making them flush and preen. In his eyes every female is wonderful and special in her own way.

The males attached to (or trying for) the current object of his attention don’t always seem to understand that he is just paying due homage to the fabulousness that is that particular dragoness. Words are occasionally said. Threats are sometimes made. Once in a very great while, threats are acted upon. At which point Chaviv is usually forced to demonstrate that he is as practiced in the arts of war as he is in the courtly ones.

All this hides the fact that he is searching for that one special female. The one that makes his heart sing. He longs for the day he meets her.

Not that will stop his flirting. He could no more do that then stop his heart from beating.


It had been a delightful day. A rousing session in the practice ring with Stephen, some quiet teaching of the finer points of magic to some of the younger dragons and two new dragoness paid court to. Juno, a stunning, shimmering, glory of an imperial sent to Stormcliff for alliance purposes with Thundershock and Nimwe, a fabulously colored skydancer who’s wits were a match for her beauty.

Chaviv flexed his wings out to let the cool night breeze play among his feathers as he perched on the highest cliff of the lairs. The slight ache in them felt good. He’d been pushed in the ring with Stephen, something he needed to do more often. Perhaps he should speak with Umbra and Tamlin about joining the patrols.

A flash of movement caught the corner of his eye and he watched a golden tundra head off toward the north. He recognized the scarf that fluttered gaily around the elegant curve of her throat. It was young Halona, but what was she doing out so late? And all alone too?

It was very unlike her, so he pushed off of the cliff and let his wings catch the wind as he followed after her. It was Tamlin’s rule after all: Always let someone know where you going. Especially at night.


Chaviv swore softly to himself, dodged, took a deep breath and summoned lightning to crash into the last of the harpies. Halona, that adorably foolish child had thought she could handle the cliff patrol. By herself! He was going to have strong words with young Ranger about this. VERY strong words.

He shook himself and took another deep breath. The current break in the fighting gave him time to cast the healing spell on himself. He vowed never to be caught without some potions again. He should have known better!

He looked back over his shoulder at the pile of golden fur that lay tucked in the rocks. She’d been nearly beaten into unconsciousness by the time he’d gotten there. He did grant that she was showing willing, she’d managed to take one of the beasts out by herself but she was not match for four of them. He snapped back around as the sound of claws on stone echoed around.

Dodos.

This time he didn’t bother to keep the swearing to himself. The Shade blasted things were as fast as he was. Stormcatcher help him, sometimes they were faster!

They clacked at him. He growled back and threw bolts of lightning at them, making them scatter. This was not good. He was flanked.

He was just taking another breath to call the lightning again when he heard a very welcome sound. The sharp thwack of dragon wings cutting through the air.

Trev slammed down out of the sky as only a imperial can and obliterated one of the foes. The remaining ones, showing just how stupid they were, launched themselves at the massive dragon. Trev slaughtered the closest one with almost contemptuous ease.

Chaviv took the opportunity to send the lightings at the other one. Since he was no longer alone, he had no compunctions about holding his powers back. The dodo vanished in rain of ash and sparks.

Trev looked around before pacing over to Chaviv, “Are you well? Have you seen Halona?” There was a sharp note of command in the other's voice

Chaviv leaned on the rocks, “Well enough. She’s behind me. I’ve done what I can but we need to get her to Skye as quickly as we can.”

“Skye follows me,” Trev rumbled. Then reached out and touched noses with Chaviv, “Thank you brother."
