Being a stormguide isn't easy. Especially for larger breeds like imperials, it's like trying to land cargo aircraft onto a target as small as a helipad. This is where marshallers such as Midnight come in. With the use of signals, they aid stormguides into designated collection points and ensure that lightning hits the right target.

A strong bond between marshall and stormguide is often necessary, as the marshall has to be familiar with the stormguide's particular flight style (e.g. an imperial will fly and land differently than a skydancer. And each individual can exhibit different flight styles.)

most marshalls are actually in relationships with their assigned harvesters. In fact - it is encouraged among both classes as couples tend to have higher success rates with safe landings even when marshall and/or stormguide has/have unorthodox methods of performance
Midnight is no exception to this. She is assigned and in a relationship with imperial stormguide Volan. While both are private about their relations and personal life, it's more like an open secret to the site. (It's impossible to hide relations between marshall/stormguide partners as partnered dragons are typically assumed to be in a relationship with each other. Cases of both not being in relations are more surprising than the former.)

her naturally luminescent tail is her primary tool for signalling stormguides into their intended target. While this is considered as unconventional (as marshalls typically and are trained to use two lights for signals) she is primarily assigned to her partner who is familiar with her tail signalling. And with the little to zero chance of her being assigned to a different stormguide, administration has decided to let her be.
