It was no secret that after Mark's arrival, the majority of clan members had become used to a life of luxury, hesitant to do much if not actively incentivized. They had stayed because of Mark's promises of a miraculous world, science and technology interacting with the arcane to create a landscape where almost nothing was required of them. And to an extent, that was true. While Mark did put the clan to work, it was rarely in the work a usual clan would be doing. Software, hardware, he treated the clan as if it were another Waddle and it showed. All sorts of wonderful amenities were provided to make sure clan members would never want to leave, that from the outside it appeared too good to be true, even if the actual pay was minimal. The majority of the clan's upkeep is maintained by its veterans from its days in nature and the various 'interns', popping in and popping out as Mark needs. They're paid in income that comes from Mark's "inventions"--and the robotic dragons who've used the clan's outer platform as a charging port. This was the state of the clan to many, a gas station with a cafe that only the worst of the worst resorted to--nobody knew except for Mark whether a new arrival would be given the luxury of those who stayed or be relegated as just another intern. And those who stayed stayed forever.
However, there was always the possibility people would start seeing past his tricks. The interns would leave en masse, or the charging ports and cafe would barely make enough money to sustain the clan's infinite usage of such appliances. The way of life in the clan grows to be unsustainable the more members join permanently--and Mark needs the illusion of infinite luxury if he's to maintain his social prowess, and Spam's happiness.
This is where Gladstone Gander comes in. From the moment he was born, it was to be known that Gladstone was the luckiest dragon in the world. From the moment his egg hatched, it was as if the world refused to give him a bad day. He indulges in luxury that comes to him, be it random dragon gifts, 100,000th customer awards, or seemingly randomly generated events, everything seems to work out in his favor. He's banned from Roundsey's for having found and redeemed the ticket to the grand prize despite not entering--twice. Some say that the luck between the two eggs in his nest was lopsided, giving his brother extraordinarily bad luck in exchange. Others say that he was blessed by a magical sorceress, whereas his brother was cursed. Either way, the constant blessings have made him apathetic and cocky, some would say everything the clan symbolizes.
So, by Mark's logic, if Gladstone was in the clan... that meant nothing bad could happen to the clan. Right? ...Right?
It's superstitious, yes. But if he's going to be in arcane now, if he's going to utilize the arcane to enhance "his" tech, this is his shot at ensuring longevity--so long as he plays his cards right. Every once in a while, Mark searches the clan for Gladstone--making sure he doesn't associate himself with those not quite satisfied with his rule. Surely, if Gladstone's friends aren't on his bad side, nothing bad should happen to him. He doesn't even need to worry about it! What? He's worrying about it now? No. It's not like Gladstone's luck has been proven to only be self-beneficial, what are you talking about? It's fool-proof, see! As long as he makes sure Gladstone never gets bored, everything will be fine. Everything will be fine.
Spam noticed Mark panicking... As long as they're together, they shouldn't have anything to worry about, should they?
