(Refusal of the Call)

“Your path will be stained with blood. The only light to guide you will be the stars, dim and distant above. Your duty is to follow that path and don't look back.”

The young dragon heard these words in his dreams ever since he could remember. “Never look back,” “bloodstained,” “distant light.” When he told his parents, they seemed suitably impressed. His mother knew what it meant, every possible meaning it could ever mean. Even his name reflected his vast responsibility: Honorbound. That kind of weight was crushing for a kid.
So, he didn't think about it. He dismissed his bad dreams as nothing more and refused to analyze them for hidden meanings. When his parents taught him about the stars, he listened, but when they emphasized his place in the grand scheme of things he daydreamed instead. His name was shortened to HB, and he refused to answer to anything else.
Everyone around him knew though. He came from a long line of seers, of prophets. Dragons privileged with seeing what was to come in the woven patterns of what had been. His mother was naturally talented, and skilled in its use. He didn't pry into her work too much, preferring to experience things for himself.

When he decided to leave, he wasn't certain. No one tried to stop him, but no one seemed happy for him either. This was his chance to be free of that weight, to live life for himself. He might still be honor bound, but that binding couldn't keep him from living.
