The entry is written in faded ink, a date scrawled at the top of the page next to a short title that reads “The Wishing Well”. It is the account of one James Felton regarding a peculiar visit to an old fountain in the Hewn City.

For as long as anyone can remember, the Hewn City’s dusty channels have been cracked and empty. Perhaps long ago, before the land sunk into shadows, those channels were filled with water, carrying boats and feeding a series of fantastic fountains. There are still populations who live on the outskirts of the ruins, and recently a rumor has begun to spread about water trickling through the Hewn City once more.

As an archeologist, naturally I came to investigate and found myself in the rather peculiar town of Penumbra. It was a dusty old civilization plagued by the same eternal twilight that swallowed the remainder of the City. The buildings were crafted from old marble, now worn to a lackluster grey and fissured with deep cracks. The cobblestone roads sat unevenly over an undulating earth that constantly shifted them out of place. At the center of Penumbra there was a grand fountain that had been drained and empty for over a millennia. A deep crack split the fountain in two, yet as I approached I found that indeed it was now filled with water.

My suitcase fell to the cobblestone with a faint clatter, but I paid it little mind. So focused I was on this marvel, this miracle of water that filled something so physically impossible of containing it. I looked down past the rippling surface, greeted by the magnified flicker of gold that settled upon the worn tile. A child rushed by me then, flipping a coin into the fountain and closing his eyes to make a wish. I watched as the water swallowed his offering, the coin gently sinking to join the thousands of others that already rested in its depths.

I slept restlessly that night, my mind plagued by questions. Where had the water come from? How did it not seep from the cracks in the stone? What about those coins? Certainly there were far too many of them to have been from the townsfolk and its visitors alone… and the thought of them surviving in the old fountain without being plucked away by explorers made equally little sense.

“It’s a miracle” I heard someone call the following morning. “I’ve regained my sight!” Such a curious remark, yet it was not alone. Penumbra echoed with cries of cheer. “We have been blessed!” They called “the fountain has heard our wishes! It was bestowed upon us a miracle!”

I went to investigate the fountain once more and found that child sitting upon the stone rim, now playing with a toy fish that he dipped in and out of the water. The fish was wooden, yet its painted scales shimmered with iridescent hues as if it were alive. “Lovely fish you have there” I commented with a smile. The child grinned “It’s my wish!” He replied triumphantly. “The fountain gave it to me”.

Throughout the city, miracles sprang forth. Each of them had a similar tale - “I went to the fountain” they said, “I wished upon a golden coin and I tossed it into the depths”.

Perhaps I too should have simply made a wish and offered the fountain a coin. I peered down and for a moment thought I saw a flash of golden scales. A fish, perhaps? Although it may have only been a trick of the light. I thought I might analyze the fountain further and I reached down into the water, pulling up one of the many golden coins. It seemed like an ordinary coin and I pocketed it quickly. I intended to take it back to my workshop for I hadn’t thought anyone would notice the absence of a single token.

Later that night I found myself navigating the strangest of dreams. I wandered through Penumbra, yet I could barely see through a thick fog that settled over the city. The stone below my feet was wet and I had to trudge through several inches of water that was now flooding the streets. I could see the silhouette of the fountain as I approached, ringed in an eerie light. The water seemed to be rippling forth, overflowing from the stone rim. I clutched the stolen coin in my pocket and turned away. Yet no mater which path I took, I found myself back before the fountain. The water in the streets was rising higher and higher until I trudged waist deep through the flooding city.

Then I saw something rather peculiar. I was facing the fountain once more, but a dark shape now perched upon its rim. I recognized a flicker of its iridescent scales, the same shining pattern as the toy fish I saw some days prior clutched in that child’s hand. Yet this was certainly no fish. It was a great finned beast that glared at me, eyes gleaming with the same golden hue as the coins in the fountains depths. A massive finned tail flared out behind it, and it parted its jaws to reveal a series of needled teeth before it slid from the rim of the fountain and swam towards me through the flooded streets.

I woke up screaming. I was disorientated and yet pain bloomed from my hand. My clothing was wet, stained darkly along my left side… and it didn’t take much longer to realize that my hand was missing entirely, along with the golden coin it had been clutching.

It took several weeks to recover from my injury and the next time I visited the fountain, the water was gone. The people of Penumbra said it vanished overnight, along with the thousands of golden coins in its depths. I saw that child still sitting on the rim of the fountain, staring wistfully at the dry tile. “Where’s your fish?” I asked him and he only gave me a sad smile. “They’ve moved on to grant wishes elsewhere.”

As far as I’ve heard, Penumbras fountain has remained empty. Still I come upon rumors from time to time of water in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps an oasis in the middle of the Shifting Expanse, a crumbling river basin in Dragonhome… The water comes overnight and its depths are always sparkling with innumerable golden coins and perhaps a flash of shining scales.
