Nightspring loves Autumn. The season, sure, but he loves his mate more than all the annual weather conditions combined. She's tiny and cheerful, and she never forgets to bring him a bite to eat. She loves hatchlings and the season she's named after, so Nightspring makes an effort to love those things too. She's perfect, and the only thing he's ever truly feared is failing at his job and losing her. (She's so fragile, from wingtips to tiny claws - the first few weeks after they'd met he kept having ridiculous nightmares about sitting on her accidentally.)

Once, she'd brought up the idea that he's obliged to love her, because she's his charge. What if she hadn't been his charge? Would he be alone the way he likes, or off with another pretty lady? He'd reassured her immediately - he loves her because she's his charge, and despite her being his charge, and would love her regardless forever.

They share meals together, and go on walks together, and he watches fondly on while she rounds up the hatchlings for some game or another. He's not too fond of certain concepts, like making friends, socializing, or even just going out and seeing strangers, but he's never minded her company. She's so much a part of his life that he thinks the rumors about Guardians are true - he really would pine away to nothing if he lost her.

Thankfully, his mate has proven more than capable of taking care of herself. She's scolded him on more than one occasion for being overprotective ("But it's what I do!" he protests. "It's actually in the job description.") but in quiet moments she confides that she doesn't really mind. She says it's sweet and touching, and then gives him a friendly headbutt. It's one of the only things that can make him smile without fail.

When Autumn's away from him, for whatever reason, he can't help but fret. He has a reputation for being grumpy, and he's found that other dragons stay away from him even more than usual when she's not around. It's likely a combination of both his increased moodiness at being separated from her and fretting, and the fact that she's not around to soften his presence with her kind smiles and helpful manner. He tries to watch himself, for her (because he actually doesn't give a mouse's tail about how the other dragons see him, even when they're part of his own clan) but he suspects he rather often fails. He's resigned himself to the fate of other dragons avoiding him - he really doesn't mind, because he likes his space and he likes the quiet that comes along with being alone. The only dragon he's found he doesn't mind at all is his mate, and he's completely fine with keeping that list short with its singular entry.
