//// Kk or kk grows a rat to standard or large size. KK means the dwarf gene is dominant and phenotypical. Two dominant copies are necessary for expressing the dwarf size.
//// Dd refers to ear set; dd expresses standard ears, Dd or DD will have dumbo ears. Only one dominant copy necessary for expressing the dumbo ear set.
//// Ss Rr is coat type, of which there are several varieties. Standard coat, Rex coat, Satin coat, and Hairless. Other “rarer” types include Double Rex, Poor Hairless, and Bristle. Ss rr, SS rr, or SS Rr will all be standard phenotypical coats; Ss Rr or ss Rr will give a rex phenotypical coat; ss rr will express a hairless coat; ss RR could express either double rex or poor hairless coats; and SS RR will give a phenotypical satin coat.
//// Some rats may carry an additional -h at the end of the S (and sometimes R) locus. A rat with two copies of -b has a chance of expressing odd eyes; however, odd eyes will only be expressed if the rat has genes for ruby eyes. //// Lastly, tltl refers to tail length. Most rats will be tltl and have normal tails. However, some rats will just be born with shorter tails, and some with no tail at all. For this to occur, a rat has to be affected with a mutation or chance a mutation occurring during pairings. This mutation is Tltl (shortened tail), and rarely TlTl (stumped tail or tailless) as doubles of this mutation makes for sickly babies that do not typically survive in utero or into adulthood. It’s unlikely to naturally occur between tltl pairs, but it is inheritable when pairing a rat that has a dominant mutation. It’s advised not to pair rats that have risky genes.
