QUOTE Sunset is a bard and one of the leaders of the clan. She performs in the tavern at least three times a week, and is well loved by both clan members and patrons alike. She is married to Leo, the tavern owner, and she and Riggs are as close as family. When push comes to shove, Sunset acts as the voice of reason to her husband's bleeding heart. She is kind and gentle, but she is no doormat, and patrons who step out of line receive what is colloquially known as 'The Look.' A stern, withering glare that puts even the proudest and most rambunctious of patrons in their place without a single word.
SUMMARY
|
Sunset grew up in a band of traveling performers. She was talented and well loved by the patrons of their shows since she was just a hatchling, but she always felt just a little bit empty and out of place amongst her peers. The leader of the troupe was demanding and unkind, treating the other members like assets rather than companions. The other members were very distant with each other, sometimes bordering on cold. She dreamed of one day finding a home that could fill her with the warmth and comradery that she was always missing in her life, and when she came of age, she decided to make that dream a reality.
Sunset left her troupe, taking the road of the lone performer as she scoured the lands for a place that could fill the hole in her heart. One day she came upon a flier advertising that a new local tavern was looking for performers, and having nothing to lose, she decided she would give the place a shot. She never would have believed in that moment that she would find the place she had been searching for her whole life.
The Trick O' the Light Tavern was clearly old, and she could see the love and effort put in to restoring it to its former glory from all the way down the road. There was something different about the typical sounds of merriment that was difficult for her to place, but something about it was calling to her like the pull of a bright and catchy tune, beckoning her to the dance floor with it's up-beat vitality.
Stepping in was like walking into a dream. It was like any other tavern she'd ever entered - warm and bustling with activity - but there was something else in the air. Something genuine and full in a way she had never experienced before. The room itself was humming with life, love, and the obvious care of the owner. The patrons were talking and laughing, as expected, but they were also connecting, sharing, discovering new people and interests and stories. It was familiar. It was different. It was perfect. She had never felt more at home.
After her very first performance, Sunset worked out a deal with the owner, Leo, to perform three times a week in exchange for a permanent place to stay. She got to know Leo and his, erm... assistant, Riggs, very well over the first few months. Riggs, though odd and occasionally bumbling, was a font of wisdom. They bonded over their feelings of abandonment from their past clans, and learned much from each other whilst discussing the ways in which they were similar, and the ways in which they were very different indeed. She sees Riggs as the loving older relative she never really had, and is always the first to defend them when their place in the clan comes into question.
Her relationship with Leo was strained and awkward for the first few weeks. At first she took his bruskness and grumblings to be what she was most used to them being - coldness, distance, and a lack of care or understanding. She couldn't understand how a man like that could be the owner of such a warm and joyful establishment. She attributed the atmosphere to Riggs' presence for a while, but quickly came to realize that couldn't be the entire truth. After all, Riggs mostly kept the place tidy and in good repair, spending most of their time being a terror in the kitchens or regaling any patrons who would tolerate them with their stories, when there was nothing pressing that needed their attention.
It was Leo who spent the most time at the counter, taking care of the patrons, solving problems and disputes, getting people what they ordered, and making sure everyone had what they needed. It didn't make sense with her perception of his character. How could such a stern, cold-hearted man facilitate such a rich, welcoming atmosphere?
Over the next few months, Sunset watched Leo closely whenever she wasn't performing, trying to figure out this mystery. What she saw upon closer inspection was not a distant or heartless man, but a deeply compassionate one. She saw a man who listened to people's struggles and complaints, no matter how silly or how serious they were, and who truly cared about how those experiences made them feel. She saw a man who generously gave his home to those in need, even when they had no means to repay him. She saw a man who would look over the rowdiest and noisiest of crowds with a small, loving smile when he thought no one else was looking, and she quickly fell deeply and hopelessly in love.
Sunset and Leo married less than two years after meeting. Now his beloved wife and his business partner, Sunset has enjoyed every minute of watching their tavern grow into a budding young clan. She is the wit, the charm, and the voice of reason within the clan's leadership, keeping Riggs out of trouble and cautioning her husband to use his better judgement when his soft, bleeding heart gets a little out of hand.
