The middle of spring was a happy time for Asher and Omen. Asher only had to hunt for food, Omen was starting to reach out to Asterion again through letters (though not quite ready to face any other dragons yet) and Tanavra was planning on staying with them next month! Omen gazed through the front window of their cabin. It was so peaceful- nothing like the life he'd had before. Omen couldn't have imagined 2 years ago that he'd have anyone to call a friend, and yet here he was with one friend and his amazing mate. If he didn't know any better, he might've told himself that it was just too good to be true.

"Omen!"

The cry had his heart racing. Before he could even think about it, he was climbing up the stairs to the room he and Asher shared, before he paused.

They were on the floor, back against the bed, all the softest blankets had been pulled off of it, and were surrounding him on the floor like a bird's nest. Asher was holding something in her claws. They must've heard him, because she slowly turned to look at him. He couldn't describe the mix of emotions he saw in those yellow eyes.

Neither one spoke a word as Asher revealed what he was holding - so gently, like she was afraid of harming what they held. And when Omen laid eyes on the object, he took a small step forward. It was mostly brown, and had veins of slowly glowing oranges and yellow. An egg.

Neither of them spoke for a moment, and Asher gently moved their wings to allow Omen to sit beside her. Omen took the moment to stare at the egg closer. The glowing of it would shift from orange to yellow almost like a heartbeat, or breathing. He almost wanted to reach out and hold them close, but found himself unable to even try. The thought of hurting the egg was too much for him to bear. The silent moment was broken when Asher turned to Omen and asked "What do we do?"

And wasn't that a problem? They were alone. Neither had really dealt with hatchlings aside from when they were the same age, and neither had ever been caretakers of eggs. It was entirely new territory for them both, and neither had friends to ask about this. 'What about family?' Omen found himself wondering. Asterion, though Omen hadn't tried to reach out for years, would surely know more about egg caretaking, or at least would be able to get more information they'd need, than either of them. Asterion had at least taken care of hatchlings before, so he'd know that much.

"Maybe Golden Tree Village?" He hated how unsure and weak his voice sounded to his own ears.

Asher's eyes went a bit wide, and Omen glanced away to stare at the egg again. He didn't want to see the shock in his eyes at that. It was pointless, however, as they gently wrapped their wing around him.

"Tanavra might know something." Asher tried, and Omen knew it wasn't entirely impossible, but it was unlikely they'd ever have had the chance to live much of a softer life. Tanavra was still secretive to them both, though, so.. perhaps?

"We can send a letter." He whispered, not quite willing to move away from the egg. Their egg. Asher rested her head on his shoulder, and Omen reached to pull the blankets closer around them, and used his tail to push a few pillows off the bed. He hoped they were soft enough.

Only when Asher curled up around their egg, surrounded and on top of every blanket and pillow they owned, did Omen get up to write the letter, handing it to Armin, the War Flight, to take to it's intended recipient. All they could do now was wait.

Tanavra arrived just a day later, and they were able to teach the both of them a few smaller things about Eggs in general, learning that she had multiple kid siblings in the process. But despite having siblings, he hadn't actually had to do much more than occasionally hold them or play with them. One huge hurdle being the 'magma baths' Fire eggs needed to be healthy. Omen had no idea how to properly use his magic to even try, and Asher wasn't capable of complex spells that were needed to gently put or grab their egg from the magma. As a dragon who was well versed in Fire Magic, Tanavra was the only one they knew who could do this for them.

Omen had been a father for all of 2 days and he was failing to keep his child healthy.

"I can take them for their first bath." Tanavra was kind enough to offer, and Omen smiled as brightly as he could, guilt weighing heavily on his shoulders.

"Thank you." He whispered, hoping that all the gratitude was made clear, since it was all he could say through the burning of being a horrible father.

"I'll make sure they're okay. I promise you they'll be safe." Tanavra replied, taking the egg with more grace than he or Asher could allow themselves to. It hurt, watching their friend leave with their egg, being able to bring them better care, than he could ever admit.

"We need to learn more about egg care taking." Asher whipped her tail, bringing the blankets around the pillow their egg was resting on. Omen agreed, but still had to stifle a sigh. He'd rather pull out his own teeth than deal with more heartache around towns and villages, but he'd face everything and more for their child.

"We'd need Tanavra to watch them." Omen wasn't going to risk bringing their egg along. The trip could be dangerous depending on how they reacted to him. And while he knew he could escape should he have to, and egg would just complicate more and more.

"I'll ask if she can do it." Asher was determined. Tanavra smiled and offered to take the egg for another bath while they were gone, and Omen was so grateful. There had to be more ways for non-fire dragons to give their eggs magma baths. There must be so much more they were able to do for their egg. Nothing in the books they'd read in weeks had anything substantial in them, and they didn't want to mess up any more.

So, they shoved all their fears and doubts aside, and flew on. They'd be back before dark, and everything would be okay.

"Where did you find this egg?" Of course they'd ask. The one time they even bother to ask, and it's when he can't get caught.

"I found it, it was next to a body, I assume one of the parents." He replied, staring at the egg. "I couldn't take them in, I've got family of my own I need to focus on."

The worker stared at him for a moment longer, too long, he needed to go! "...Fine, if that's your story." The worker took the egg and tucked it close to their chest. "I hope you find peace with yourself."

He frowned, but ignored what they thought. If they assumed the egg was his own, all of this would be easier. He glanced at the egg a final time.

'This has to be worth it.' He turned away, spread his wings and flew away, not bothering to look back.

Omen was panicking. For once, they'd had an easy time finding information they were looking for - a nice new parent's group that had a lot of other elements for parents. They'd gifted them a small device to help them bath their egg, and had even let them know the best areas to do it without risk of their egg washing away, and a lot of other facts they'd never have guessed.

But none of it was mattering now, because Tanavra and their egg were nowhere to be found.

He could see Asher looking through the nest of blankets, hoping their egg would appear there. 2 sweeps across the cabin was already proof they weren't there though.

7 days. By Flamecaller, he wasn't prepared for any of this. Asher snarled, and got up, feather-like spines bristling and tail lashing. "We need to check the magma pools."

Neither one spoke as they took off again, leaving the mess they'd made behind. Tanavra always took them to the magma pools just a short flight away, never too far away where they'd need to worry. Typically, that is.

But before they could even get there, the smell of blood was permeating the air. It took everything he had to not crash to the ground at the sight. Subjectively, it wasn't the worst he'd ever seen, living nearby an Emperor for a year had taken the cake on that, but the fact it was his friend had made it feel all the more impactful than any random stranger's injuries ever could.

They landed, looking over Tanavra's injured body in horror. He was still breathing, but clearly out of it, as she raised her claws, snarling and slurring out a "You're going to regret this."

Asher carefully took their claws in her own. "Tanavra, it's us."

They took a moment to really look at them, eyes focusing on Asher as she broke.

"I'm so sorry, I failed."
