"I thought dragons stopped moving when they died" the hatchling whispered. "They do" Gaea said. Then, adding to herself "at least I had thought they did."

Lueca was tired. And confused. She vaguely remembered the voices of her clan as they faded into the ice. She remerbered her fallen imperial brethernen, did she remember an emperor? Had she been one? Her senses were leaving her, and the biting winter of the Southern Icefield gave no quarter. This was her homeland, and she loved it, but she knew how little her homeland love her. That was all right she supposed. No more clan to protect, no more need for her. She wanted to shift off of the ice and onto the snow, as it would have been on softer on her body, but there was no energy for that. She shut her eyes.

She peeled open her eyes again. That was a surprise. The sun was bouncing off the bright snow, and the light stabbed at her eyes, worming its way into her skull. A shadow passed in front of her, blocking out the light. She looked up. A little dragon stood over her, small and wiry, like a long cast shadow. No warm clothing that she could see, but the little shadow hardly seemed bothered.
"Good morning, my dear" it said. "How are you feeling?"
Leuca thought about that. Like a cave, she thought. Like the cave of ice of her clan, except free of dragon or possession, so that when you spoke into it the noise bounced endlessly before being swallowed by the snow. She huffed at the stranger. The stranger bent its head and nuzzled hers. "I know" she said. She flicked her tail, shuddered her wings. "Why don't you come with me? Its terribly bright out here, isn't it. I'm like you, you know. No one to my name, but I've dug myself a hole in the tangled wood. Dark as pitch, it is, I'm sure you'd like it."
Lueca thought for a moment, then, slowly, heavy a lead, pulled herself off of the ice, the snow slid from her wings, and she looked at herself. She was surprised. Her beautiful crimson wings had faded to sickly grey at the ends, and were the color of blood at the top. Her iridescent ice scales had discolored, as if all of her blood had bubbled under her skin in her veins, the color modulating from the blue of deadly cold to the color of dried blood. She shook her head, trying to shake of the ice that still clung to her crown. She looked up and the shadow had already begun walking, so she followed.

The shadow hadn't been lying when she said she'd dug a hole. That's what it was, but it was dark and warm, and later, she pulled more dragons into it, and the whole grew bigger and brighter, and more lively. Leuca went out and hunted, defend fought, and then came back and lied down, unmoving. Some tried to speak to her, but she never replied.

Then the first nest was laid. Lueca couldn't help it, she curled around the eggs, nuzzled them, to encourage the little hatchlings to move inside. She placed her maw against the eggs and gave a low comforting, rumble. She began to closer her eyes, but then she realized the eggs didn't warm, she was too cold to warm them successfully, So, she slunk away from the nest, found Gaea, and nudged her back toward the nestled eggs. She stood rigid as she watched Gaea approach the nest. Gaea, already fearful of the silent dragon, crept to the eggs, and then very carefully lowered herself into the nest and curled around the eggs. Lueca curled on the ground as well, laying down as if to sleep, but still watched the dragon with the eggs. Finally, Gaea closed her eyes to sleep, but Leuca continued to watch, her cold heart giving a twist. The knowledge that she could at least protect the dragon and the eggs gave little comfort.

The nest hatched a little later. The sniffed at Gaea, and she help clean the remenants of the egg off the hatchling's hide. Lueca approached, low at an attempt to be unassuming. The hatchling's noticed and shrieked when they laid eyes on her. The shook and hid behind Gaea, eyeing Lueca from behind her wings. Lueca turned, and slunk away.
"Mama Gaea" one of them whispered.
"Yes, little one?" she replied.
"I thought dragons stopped moving when they died" the hatchling said.
"They do" she said, and then to herself, added, "at least I had thought they did."
Lueca didn't approach the hatchlings again.

It was a very hot day. Very hot. The driftwood drag was hot and soupy, the air was stagnant and didn't move. The heat was oppressive and it didn't dissapate, even into the night. The hatchlings were cowering, huddled into Gaea, trying to fight off the fear from the spectres so common in the cave. They were trying to fall asleep, but the heat was too invading. Finally, one of the hatchling's slunk away from Gaea and curled into Lueca's side. She sat up from her spot on the floor and blinked in surprise, before wrapping herself around the hatchling. The others followed suit.

The hatchlings always fear her at first. She takes a little getting used to. But they always warm up to her. She's the most patient of all the dragons when it comes to the hatchlings. They climb and bite and nip, they pull tails and ears and toes, but Leuca lets them, and entertains them, and curls around them until they fall asleep.
