from nahuatl tlatoa, "to speak"

Tlatoa stumbled into the Hewn City searching for magically-augmented life-forms. That is to say, he wanted to discover the effects of the Shade on indigenous flora and fauna. It was truly quite fascinating. You see, the effects of the Shade are so variable and complex, no two similar organisms exposed to it will exhibit the same mutation. There is much to learn in this strange land!

Matriarch Solarwing only understood every sixteenth word the coatl said. Still, she was charmed by his unmistakable thirst for knowledge and welcomed him into Clan Aurora. He returns the favor daily by spearheading the clan's gathering missions, collecting the inedible items for his own research. Despite his borderline-incomprehensible speech, Tlatoa is well-liked by his clanmates. His cheerful manner is a beacon in the darkness of the Hewn City.

His best friend is Atrox. Atrox never speaks, which is fine by Tlatoa. That meant they didn't interrupt his observations. He could hum and chitter and click over a lizard with two heads, and Atrox would patiently listen. They also would not laugh when he would accidentally chase the mutant into a thornbush. They would simply pick the thorns out of his feathers and watch as he repeated the process all over again.

"How many languages do you speak?" Siope asked, delicately easing a drop of ooze into a beaker.
