 There was a rumor among the dragons of the Tangled Woods. A rumor about an old wishing well that would appear mysteriously in the woods. “Stay away” parents whispered to their children, “least you fall in! Least you are devoured by the beast that lurks in its depths”. Those with superstitious minds might have been afraid. . . But there were others who met such rumors with a glint of curiosity in their bright eyes. Their fear was replaced by a thousand questions that they would stop at nothing to understand.

Roe’s sleep was interrupted early. She growled as she felt the damp stone shift around her form. The familiar scent of rotting leaves was replaced with something else. The air was heavily charged, as if heralding an impending storm. It reminded her of a time from long, long ago and her brilliant electric eyes snapped open. She was being summoned, her stone well materializing at the edge of a precipice that dropped off from the Hewn City and down into the Shade-tainted depths of the Carrion Canyon. Soon, she would heed that call, but first. . . She was hungry. Rumors spread quickly among the Lightning dragons. A strange well had appeared and several of their own had gone missing. Many dragons thought it best to stay away. Yet even the disappearances did little to deter those of a more scientific nature from flocking to the old stone structure. That was how Gilbert found himself staring down into the dark mouth of the well. For a moment, he thought he heard a quiet voice echoing from the depths. He had earned himself the title of a mad scientist and while many other researchers set up monitors and sent drones down into the darkness. . . Gilbert contemplated for only a moment before he simply jumped inside.

No one had ever returned from the depths of the well and most thought that the mad scientist wouldn’t make it out either. The drones sent down descended into the darkness indefinitely until their signals were lost and only static crackled on their pilots’ screens. Yet by some miracle, the entire well disappeared a few days later, leaving the Spiral laying on his back on the ground. A wide grin was plastered on his face and he laughed as he held up a handful of brown feathers. Something else stirred around the Spiral and onlookers were shocked to find three hatchlings with bizarre patches of fur and feathers sleeping beside the scientist. “What happened in there?” They questioned, but the Spiral only laughed as he replied. “I’ve just had the most fantastic of dreams”.
