Juugo was a prisoner of Orochimaru, though he seeked him out of his own free will. Although he was normally a peaceful young man, he would go berserk if enraged, unwillingly killing everyone around him. Juugo hoped to get a cure for this curse from Orochimaru or, at least, not kill anyone else.
He was a good friend of Kimimaro and felt secure in his presence, knowing that Kimimaro was always able to stop his rages before anyone could get hurt. Before Kimimaro left for his last mission he visited Juugo and explained to him that Sasuke would be his legacy.
With this in mind Juugo later joined Sasuke's team Taka.
Juugo saw Kimimaro and Sasuke as his living 'cages', able to prevent him from hurting people he did not want to hurt.

Juugo gets along well with nearly everybody in his normal state, but acts crazy, violent and with killing intent in his enraged state. He grows scales on his body when enraged and his eyes turn black.
Although he hates his enraged state and fears to enter it unwillingly, he does use it to protect his friends and group frequently.
Juugo likes animals and especially birds seek his companionship when he is in his calm state.
