—APPEARANCE—

Despite her fearsome armor and vicious demeanor, one only needs to peer past her armor and see how it swallows her body to understand Nadia’s motivations. She is a frail, sickly looking thing wrapped in jagged edges. Her prematurely silvered hair is cropped short to evade the maintenance longer cuts require. The muscle that makes up her body does nothing to hide the lines of her bones. Her four blood-colored eyes are sunken and lightless. An Arcanite—or any other skilled mage—will notice the cause of this immediately; the buzz of magical energy is nearly completely absent from her body. Only the barest of embers burn within. However, she needs it not; her blades and her wits are enough.

—HISTORY—

Long before her birth, Nadia’s father was nearly a sacrifice to a hungering Shadebeast. The thing devoured most of the magic that lay within him, only leaving enough of a soul for him to survive. He would never live again, only exist. The energy of his mate helped to renew his own a little, but it would never be the same. A brutal blow was dealt to him, and he has spent every day since agonizing over how to live with the scar left behind. What he failed to realize in his ruminations, up until the birth of his first daughter, was that this wretched thing could affect his children too.
The condition is, for Nadia, less like a scar and more like a creeping rot, consuming her from the inside. It twists around her bones and constricts like a serpent, leaving her in shuddering agony. Her every step feels like it costs more energy than she can expend, and complex movements are often too much for her. Even so, she resists the illness, and the temptations of the Shade. It whispers in her ears at night, promises that it can fix her, make her whole…
She knows it’s toying with her. It did this to her, and now it promises to fix it? It’s fishing for a way to consume everything she has, rather than just her energy.
But some nights, when her bones ache and the slightest motion makes her want to scream, she thinks it might be the only option she has.

—ASSOCIATIONS—

The bounty hunter and the gatekeeper raise children equipped for the chaos and danger of the Wasteland. Each one receives combat training intended for members of the Lockjaw guard, and has their first formal combat experience before they are fully grown. Some take more away from it than others. Regardless, though, they all have one thing in common; their father’s vendetta has led them to know more about battling the Shade than anything else.
