The Hewn City sprawls like an invitation, a slack mouth pried open by the fingers of ghosts, and the dark shadows and empty alleys are an irresistible temptation. He is enchanted by the unknown, the stories they whisper in the dead of night to frighten one another: He memorizes the cobblestoned streets, the crumbling walls, inviting himself into graveyards and memorials, dreaming of labyrinthine caves beneath the surface of the city, of hidden-away diaries, treasures, and gold.

Dutifully, he hunts, he patrols, he eats, he sleeps, but his mind slips away to the winding streets, the dusty forgotten attics, the decrepit basements. There are bloodstains on the stairs, there are claw marks dragged across broken glass. He mires himself in ancient death, as if knowing the secrets of it will make him immortal, and in doing so does not realize that the Hewn City peers back at him, softly catching him back when others seek to pull him away, poisoning his dreams with glimpses of secrets it never intends to betray.
