Deepspace Aethers, with extreme adaptations oriented to surviving expeditions outside the ship, found themselves at loose ends upon the return to Sornieth. There didn't seem to be anywhere to create a new home where their skills would be useful. But something in them demanded that they continue with their training and purpose: to explore, to document, to discover.
As it turned out, deepsea exploration into the Abyssal zone required some of the vary adaptations that made them so adept in outer space. They had a naturally dark colouration to blend into the water, and the starry markings that helped with navigation in space could be lit up in sequences to communication across long distances. The ability to survive extremes in pressure and temperature was naturally useful so far under.
As time went on, generations of Aethers became adapted to deepsea exploration specifically, and developed one last trait to help out on expeditions: brightly glowing tails. Named the Guiding Seastars, these Aethers lead expeditions and scout ahead, signaling to the others with their bright markings and acting as beacons in the dark with their tails. Teams of them act as message relays across large distances, to quickly carry information and warnings up from the depths to the surface. But most importantly, they prevent others becoming lost at sea by lighting up their tails at full strength and leading them to safety.
