Biography

For a stretch of time, you still woke up when you were supposed to. You milked the cows and let them reign havoc on the pasture. You collected the eggs and set the hens loose on the ants. You picked burrs out of sheep wool with bare fingers because you never remember to bring gloves. Your skin's all callous, anyhow. You make yourself dinner—more soup. Or maybe tonight it will be baked beans and brussel sprouts from the garden. You keep everyone alive as best as you can, in spite of the world trying to cave in one hoof rot, one tetanus, one coyote at a time.

You used to have a dog for the coyotes. She was a collie who loved you very much. You think that she would have nursed you had she been able. You inherited her from your father–you inherited everything from your father. When it came time, you couldn't replace her. You buried your dog behind the barn where you buried your father because you couldn't afford a funeral.

You think he would've wanted nothing to separate him from the earth's hungry maw anyway. He was never a wasteful man; he understood the beetles have to eat too.

You take care of yourself and the animals. Every Tuesday and Thursday, you hike up to the payphone and dial the number for your brother's college dorm.

Once in a blue moon, he answers. You play conversational hockey. You ask about his classes and he'll ask about the farm. Between you, all the miles and things you can't say rattle like the quarters in your pocket. Eventually, he says he has homework. You picture him like a migrating bird, the kind that doesn't stop in the heartland because why would they? They don't have what they need. You will hang up and collect the regurgitated coins (the call was less than an hour, you think) and you slough back to your house. You have the only light for miles and that's your company.

You try not to think about the unwashed quilt stashed in the back of the closet. You try not to think about the bad patch job on the barn roof. You try not to think about the angel. You only hope for a thunderstorm and you tell yourself that's what's best for the garden.
