Former Exile, then Dovesong, now The Thresher
Pronunciation: Mere - Ree |
A young traveler who, alongside her guardian, stumbled upon Wafer and his clan by chance. She was polite enough at first - but when Oslowe made the decision to stay with Wafer's group, that quickly changed. Miri threw a fit, arguing viciously with her guardian but failing to sway him. The next few months with the group were long and hard, with her nary lifting a finger and always quick to snap at whoever spoke to her. She behaved like a petulant child, bratty and self-centred. What the rest of the clan didn't know was she was desperately trying to have herself thrown out. Prior to finding Wafer, she and Oslowe had fled their home in Tide's End, a prosperous trading clan within the Sea of A Thousand Currents - one with many, many enemies. It was besieged by maren, who first poisoned their food supply in secret and then came ashore to finish off those who were only made ill. Miri, a young and picky child, had only had a few bites of dinner. Oslowe, being a guardian amongst a clan largely composed of tundras, also had only ingested a small amount of the poisoned plants. With her desperately ill and unconscious from the toxins, he bargained with the maren who had come to finish her off. He had the location of her father; the clan leader and notorious pirate who had ruined the homes and lives of so many maren and dragons alike, and he would trade it for her life. The seafolk accepted his bargain and let her live. When Miri finally awoke, she was sick and distraught, having lost everything - her mother, her friends, and all her possessions and home. She did not know she had lost her father, too. The thought of finding him once more was all she had to keep her going. As such, Oslowe did not tell her that he would surely be dead by then too. They left the Tidelord's domain in search of the man at her beseeching, only to stop and stay with Wafer. When the truth came out months later, she struck Oslowe down with her water magic, nearly killing him before fleeing into the forest bordering Wafer's lair. Wafer was the one to find her again, weeping at the edge of a river deep within the woods. She apologized for her behaviour, but begged him to leave her be as she had nothing left and didn't deserve any kindness. With newfound understanding and the pity that came with it, he promised her that if she was willing, she would be part of their clan and family. She accepted with some hesitation, taking the pearlcatcher's hand and returning. From that point on, she became a loyal member of the group. But her relationship with Oslowe never recovered. Later, after years of staying with the group out of loyalty to Wafer, Miri learned of the location of her late father’s ship from passing tradesmen. Eager to find it and undo some of the wrongs her family was responsible for - as well as be free of her guardian, Oslowe, she left to find it and restore it to sailing condition. When she reached the location of the ship, she was surprised to find it in perfect condition - only to find out that was due to a guardian by the name of Cyrus repairing the vessel after it ran ashore. Discussion over ownership soon turned to a heated argument until Cyrus’ companion, Sass, intervened. After sitting down and explaining their sides of the story, Miri was allowed to check on her family’s boat. She explained her hopes to the guardian and fae, only to be told by Cyrus he was not willing to give up the ship - his charge - so someone with such little nautical experience. At an impasse, Miri asked that they sail together, and for months, this was the arrangement. She and Cyrus butted heads at every turn until the guardian grew too weary to fight any longer - something she initially mistook for her finally winning their long-standing argument. The truth later became apparent when the boat crashed into a small island, the deceased Cyrus slumped over the helm. He had been battling an illness in private, and evidently failed. The island was home to Shoreline Castle, and those who lived within it were sympathetic and helped the crew bury their captain on the soil there, by the sea. A few also helped start to repair the extensive damage of the ship. Unfortunately, the island's guardians soon made their return, and ruined all repairs and then some to the unfamiliar vessel before they could be called off. After Miri's fury calmed, she made the decision that, screw that, they'd be staying here. She'd never have to see Oslowe again, after all. |
