Deep in the heart of the floating isle lies a great pool of water, where rests the beast Nereus. Though born in the depths among Undertides and Deep Maren, he harboured an inexplicable urge to rise to the surface. When the Undertides finally left the trenches, he first laid eyes upon the stars and knew that to watch them was his calling.

Nereus slumbers in the dark, reserving his power for clear nights when he emerges and channels everything he has into sensing ripples of existence from beyond Sornieth's skies. Some of the Magistry's most powerful artifacts are stored at the bottom of his pool, in pitch blackness where nothing can be seen but the faint arcane sheen of the watchful leviathan's scaly length.

The loyal ally and protege of the mage Nereus, Galatea is a Maren of the depths who brings undersea resources and knowledge to-and-from his companion. His speciality is enchanting objects to protect Deep Maren and other folk from changes in pressure underwater- but he is also extensively knowledgeable, and is called upon by the Magistry when historical records are required. Galatea is a bard, and Nereus is said to find his tunes incredibly soothing.
