It was rare that kelp would survive the winter waves in the Southern Icefields. Despite being warmer than their northern cousins, the shores were still bitter. The sand was little more than frozen rock, and the waters moved only when the glaciers would break. Kelp that washed up on the beaches were ghastly, at best. Pallid. Devoid of color. It made Bernard's heart ache.

He spent his time trying to cultivate a new breed of kelp that would be able to subsist under harrowing conditions - specifically, if they lacked REDACTED. After years of careful backyard splicing, he was able to produce a new variant of kelp: REDACTED. S.I. clamored to be his first buyer; his creation had unlimited potential for use in REDACTED.
