Biography

B A R E N

Baren and Mareikk were the first Nocturns of the clan - they were found as eggs, strange eggs, the likes of which had never been seen before. Histan immediately sensed that one of those eggs contained his charge, which is probably the only reason the eggs were kept, instead of being left in the wilderness for someone else to deal with.

No one knew what to do with the strange hatchlings that came out of those eggs - how could a new breed of dragon just suddenly exist? Was this a trick of the Shade? A prank out of Shadow? And why were they acting like that, going around mimicking everything and everyone in sight? Eventually, stories began spreading from clan to clan - Elsdvada was not the only clan to pick up strange eggs that night, and they weren't the only ones with copycat hatchling problems.

What Baren and Mareikk liked best was pretending to be a warriors. They played pretty much constant games of copycat, but out of all their options to copy, fierce warriors were their favorite. Now that they're grown, Mareikk really is a warrior, and Baren is a scientist. How did that happen?

He discovered books, that's what happened.

He found the library one day, just by chance, and saw some dragons reading, so of course could not help but do the same. Nobody saw him for three days; he was hooked. When he came back out again, he was hardly the same dragon; he used to be a mischievous little imp, but now he could be seen running about gathering science lab supplies and collecting odds and ends from machinery in cardboard boxes. He drew endless blueprints and rambled on about gravity and white noise and relativity and spheres.

"How is he even a Nocturne anymore?" Mareikk demanded in frustration. "He's not imitating!!"

"Of course he is," Histan chuckled, "Just none of us."

Which was a relief. Having discovered his charge was great, but being followed around by a hatchling who repeated back everything you said... got to be tiring.

"Eisenstein and Newton," Four nodded solemnly, though a smile was peeking at the corner of his large mouth. "Those are his idols now."

"Oh, what do you know, Four," Mareikk said crossly. "You're never even around."

Actually, Four knew them quite well when they were younger - all the warriors of the clan did - as they spent a lot of their time jumping out of bushes to try to scare him, or playing pranks on him, or simply rolling around yelling for him to teach them how to fight already, or else they were going to tie him up and cast vicious Nocturne spells. He ignored them in hopes they would go away, which eventually they would. He isn't minding the science obsession at all.

Zauber is Baren's number one friend, and even though Z was actually a quiet innocent little hatchling, he got in trouble quite a lot thanks to the fact that he could never resist the urge to join Baren's mischievous escapades (which usually also included Mareikk, unless she was too busy mimicking Darcy, her own personal idol). Even though Baren's obsessions have changed, their close bond has not, and Z is one of the few dragons who will sit and listen to Baren's ramblings for as long as he wishes to continue them. Z's patience and easy going nature rub off on Baren in the best possible way, and help him to sit calmly and listen through Mareikk's long rants and frustrations. He's honestly a better mate than Mareikk gives him credit for. Not that she doesn't love him, of course, but she does wish he'd go back to being exciting.
