Biography
KAGOME
GENDER: Feminine & Masculine
USAGE: Popular Culture
OTHER SCRIPTS: Kagome, かごめ, 籠目
PRONOUNCED: Kay-Go-May, Kah-Go-May
Meaning & History
Despite her appearance in the popular anime and manga series "Inuyasha" written and drawn by Rumiko Takashi, Kagome is actually NOT a traditional Japanese name. The word 'Kagome' comes from a childrens song originating in Japan. The word 'Kagome' in the song literally meant 'Lost', which fits her character in Inuyasha where as she makes her way to Fudel Japan.
Japanese word meaning "basket weaver" or "woven basket pattern". Traditionally a Japanese game (Kagome, Kagome) similar to Ring Around The Rosie, the name has become popular thanks to a female character named Kagome Higurashi from the concluded manga Sengoku Otogizoushi InuYasha (InuYasha, A Feudal Fairytale). Despite its past as a nursery rhyme and a Japanese/US condiments company, it's becoming used as a female first name (as of 2004, there is at least one female Kagome in the United States -- my daughter, and it's ranked 215th in the world in 2007). The recent manga, Kagome Kagome, also includes a female character called Kagome.
From Japanese words meaning "basket" and "eyes", a trihexagonal tiling, but commonly described as a lattice pattern.
