There's not a soul without an opinion on Neophyte. Of course, that's what happens when you've been in Ulalume longer than almost everyone else. And when you're never far from the spotlight. Some might call it a curse, but Neophyte has never had any bitter feelings about attention turning her way. Even bad press can be good press with the right spin, after all. Not that she's intentionally stirring up trouble.

It happens on accident, though. Living in Ulalume for so long means Neophyte knows the clan's secrets well, particularly the ones that involve broken rules and silly little escapades. At this point, she's the reason the clan's hatchlings know all kinds of rumours about their elders, even dragons that have passed long before they hatched. Should a fledgling dragon know that two of the more respected elders used to sneak off for romantic dalliances in their youth? Probably not, but Neophyte's loose lips could sink ships as long as there's a juicy story to be told.

Her own stories, though, seem to be an exception. What wild nonsense did she get up to in her no doubt dazzling youth? Surely a dragon with such a laissez-faire attitude must have found untold trouble before reaching her later years. And that's not even considering the hints she drops about cozy hideaways and other dragons' secret loves and fears.
Neophyte keeps them all guessing, though. For all the gentle troublemaking she gets up to nowadays, running her mouth without a thought, she keeps her past tucked away with only a few tantalizing threads escaping her grasp. Perhaps that is on purpose, too. After all, what better way to garner interest than to become a puzzle, embody a mystery? For every question she dodges, two more arise, and the rumour mill roars to life once more with fresh fuel.

The only dragons who ever get straight answers for her are the youngest ones, it seems. Perhaps because they do not ask questions with deep intent. Sometimes, they simply want to know why apples are green but sometimes red, or why some council members make mean jokes behind the others' backs. (Don't they know, as adults should, that they're being quite mean?) Hatchlings don't have agendas so much as they have unbridled curiosity, and Neophyte is happy to encourage it. Maybe if someone had indulged her growing curiosity all those years ago, she might feel less guarded about her history, less flippant about the present. Habit, though, has made it easier to brush it off and move on. Neophyte doesn't ask questions, and she doesn't give answers. She simply inspires both. Bio by Tues. |
