Once upon a time, there was a single dragon. They hatched and were given no name. Nor did they know a gender.
They were white, black, and pink. Full of nightmares and daydreams their soul was, and the two ends of the spectrum tore at their heart. As they grew older, they hungered for knowledge to ease their suffering, and one day left their home in the Starfall Isles to explore the Southern Icefield, for they heard tell that secrets were frozen away deep beneath the snow.
By chance a blizzard came, and the dragon sought shelter within a cave. The raging snow fell and fell and eventually blocked the mouth of the cave; despite the dragon's best efforts, they could not dig their way out. They had no choice but to head deeper into the cave in the hopes of finding another egress.
The cave grew ever darker and darker until suddenly, around a bend, there was blinding light. The dragon, hopeful, whipped around the turn--only to see nothing but a floating cube.
The dragon's want of knowledge could not be satiated, even in the face of entrapment. They stared into the light of the cube where it hovered in midair, and reached out to touch it with their nose.
And everything went blue.
When the dragon awoke, they found that they saw through three pairs of eyes, and trod on twelve paws. The cube had split the single dragon into three--the nightmare, the daydream, and the neutral zone of the mind.
Such pain as they were in to be one separated soul, they swore this should never happen to any other dragon. The three vowed to stay in their cave and protect the outside world from the mysterious cube. They swore to amass a following worthy of living within the cave. But none were to know the secret.
