Biography

Gaëlle
The Malachite Gale
Chaotic Good

PkKAmaj.png
The frigid southern oceans don't care if you're a powerful ice dragon or the most well-prepared beastclan. They will never run out of ways to try to kill you. Exhaustion takes many who try to fly the entire distance between the Southern Icefield and the rest of Sornieth in one go. Starvation is the final fate of those beastclans whose boats get lost at sea. And the cold is ever-present, a danger that even the hardiest survivalist can't withstand forever.

Most who get lost above the cold oceans are never seen again.

But the lucky ones might just get blown back on course...

The first sign of Gaëlle's approach is an emerald radiance in the air, her wind magic calming the air and easing her flight as she searches the vast expanses of empty water for those lost at sea. The dragon herself is harder to spot, wearing white furs that blend into the constants fogs and snowstorms of the south. But her voice is unmistakable — cheerful and confident, promising help in the unlikeliest of places. She can put an updraft under tired wings, or the wind back into tattered sails — at least for a little while. Hopefully long enough to make it back to land, however far away that may be. She can even create a pocket of breathable air underwater, in a last ditch attempt to save those whose wings have given out entirely, or who were unfortunate enough to fall overboard.

Those rescues are the most dangerous of all. The things that live that far from shore are a danger to even a fully-crewed warship. Gaëlle's spear won't be able to hold them back for long, if it even manages to slow such monsters down at all.

But Gaëlle will always be willing to face such danger. She knows that every time she takes flight she risks never coming back. Many times has she heard how one bad day in the Scarred Wasteland is enough to spell the end of the most tenacious of plague dragons. And she's challenging the worst of the oceans without even being of the water or ice flights. But so too are the people she helps. They deserve that second chance to survive. And if it's her particular talents that will give it to them, then she'll always be out there looking for those in danger.

Admittedly, Gaëlle does have some unwarranted confidence in her ability to make it safely back home. A mirror doesn't like to stay away from their pack for long, and she trusts that her desire to see her clanmates again will give her the strength to survive.

At times, Gaëlle will work alongside Arlian on search and rescue missions. But she usually prefers to strike out and search the oceans by herself. She has nothing against Arlian, but by the time someone is reported missing and that information is passed along to Clan _______, it could already be too late. Instead, Gaëlle listens to rumours on the wind and feels for the slight magical presence of others in the distance. It might not be the most accurate method of searching, but once she gets far enough away from land that there's nothing for miles in any direction, any magic she senses is worth investigating.

(Her heat vision is much less useful. Everything's cold out there.)

Despite the danger, Gaëlle finds something calming about flying so far out to sea. When it's calm, she likes to fly so close to the water's surface that she can imagine she's running and jumping across an endless blue field. Her vast wind magic makes long distance flights nearly effortless, so the waves will start getting too large long before she ever tires. It's also a break from having to be on the ground, where her magical aura is still ever-present. Gaëlle is constantly tripping over her own feet, as if she walks too quickly her magic will generate lift and send her tumbling. Other dragons might be jealous of her aerial agility, but Gaëlle wouldn't mind if she could run through the fortress halls without crashing into the ceiling.

Her spear is enchanted to return to her after she throws it. It's not something she made — Gaëlle is terrible at enchantments. Inachus gave it for her after she pulled him out of a particularly bad storm. Inachus views it as a bribe to keep her from telling others that there's storms he can't handle. But to Gaëlle it's a thoughtful gift. She kept losing her spears in the ocean while fishing, but now both the spear and fish come right back to her!

Gaëlle is surprisingly willing to be forcibly given a new outfit by Kushiel. Not because she cares about looking fashionable, but because once you tear off all the extraneous bits of flair, the fae makes clothes that are both incredibly warm and waterproof.

With all that time spent flying alone, Gaëlle often sings to herself while out at sea. In true mirror tradition, these songs' lyrics can get rather violent. She restrains herself once she's spotted someone who needs rescuing, but sound carries far across the ocean. Some of those she's saved have retold the story such that there's two spear-wielding mirrors who search for those lost at sea, and that they were just lucky the friendly one found them first.
