They are able to shoot this fluid from an impressive distance, aiming for the wings of flying dragons in an attempt to snag and capture them for assimilation to the hive.
Archers are a subtype of assimilation drone whose belly-sac carries building tar instead of assimilation fluid. The fluid’s exact chemistry varies, but most iterations of it harden within ten seconds of contact with air. Archers are capable of spitting this fluid from an impressive distance, aiming for the wings of flying dragons who pass too close to the archer’s location. Archers are often accompanied by other drones, who keep watch for potential targets and drag the captured prey back to the hive for assimilation or other purposes.
