A Paper Crown... and a heart made of glass; a tattered gown...

"What do you mean Crete has gone and taken the flight with him?" Shock could not begin to describe the sheer agony that shot through the drakaina. Within just a few weeks the entirety of her flight had turned against her, convinced that she was behind the mysterious vanishings within the flight.

How had it come to this? How could she have allowed this to happen under her watchful eye? Not only could she not protect her kin, she also was forced to pay the price and lose her entire family?

"No..." A muffled sob burst forth from her chest as she slunk back into her quarters. Kanjiru continued to speak words of comfort for the lost drakaina, but the murmurs fell on deaf ears as the defeated leader curled into a ball with a blank stare within her nest.

Kanjiru had never seen their leader look so fragile and uncertain. It was as if her heart had finally shattered; lost forever within her own personal hell. Loneliness was the cruelest pain she could've ever imagined enduring, but what hurt worse is that her own mate had taken her family away from her.

She had fought countless flights for dominance and established a massive family just to have it taken seemingly overnight from her grasp. Oh how she longed for this to be a cruel joke.

Even the most skilled healers could not help the wounds carved into her flesh by those bitter words.

In a kingdom of ash, she walks alone...

Scanning her eyes over the pitiful remainders of her flight was like dragging her scales across burning hot coals. Only a few familiar faces remained; Kanjiru, Orpheus, and Odysseus being the most familiar to her.

"I... I wish I knew what to say. I'm assuming those of you left believe in my innocence, but I can't say I'm not disappointed that everyone else thought I was guilty."

"Of course we know it wasn't your fault. Just because we're the only flight being impacted by these disappearances means nothing; you're doing your best as a leader." Kanjiru spoke up, meeting the eyes of every other dragon as if daring them to disagree. Much to Ariadne's relief, there was not a single glimmer of mistrust in the eyes of her remaining flight members... no, her family.

"It will take time, but I have faith in you as our leader. We will all stand beside you, no matter the cost." Orpheus spoke at last, rubbing his tail along her side in a friendly comforting gesture.

It took all of her remaining strength to look proud and tall surrounded by her allies; to hide the overwhelming sadness at the loss of her mate and flight.

She shook her head to clear the dissonant thoughts. It was time to rebuild, no matter how long it took.

It's the story of a Queen whose castle has fallen to the sea.

The sky seemingly poured eternally, coating the territory in miniature rivers and lakes that threatened to sweep away any little hatchlings that roamed about without their mothers. It was a devastating monsoon; one of many to swallow the territories during this wet season.

Little did she know that this rainy season would bring the first gift of many.

Ariadne was flying about during the storm, ghosting over the earth in search of predators that might try to use the storm's cover to attack their recovering flight. It was exhausting work; work that was usually passed on to other dragons now fell solely as her responsibility.

It felt as though she had been on patrol constantly despite her frequent rests, but she had no time to dawdle about the river reeds and forage as she formerly did while on patrol. She had to figure out what was causing the disappearances within her flight no matter the cost but despite her best efforts she always came out empty-taloned.

Wait. What was that?

Ariadne shook herself free of her thoughts as she spotted movement out of the corner of her eye. Veering sharply to the left, she quickly threw herself within the reeds to assess the potential danger. She had no backup to follow her if anything were to go south; she had given the other drakes time to rest and insisted on patrolling alone. A foolish move.

She cursed under her breath and scrambled to flatten her scales against the riverbed as two drakes flew over her in tandem. Their heads scanned the skies ahead of them, almost as if they were searching for something... but what?

Once the dragons had passed until they were nearly out of sight she decided to take chase; weaving between the familiar trees and staying low to the ground in order to evade their sweeping glances over the terrain.

Her pursuit would not last for long uninterrupted however, as a nearby familiar cry shocked her ears and caused her to pivot with a fierceness. That was the cry of a hatchling! In this weather?

She decided to abandon her mission, unable to deny her maternal instincts. Without a mother the hatchlings she heard most likely would not survive the night. Such a thing would weigh too heavily on her conscience if she were to turn away.

It did not take her long to discover two adorable Skydancer fledglings shivering inside a thickly grown bush, the leaves doing very little to shelter them from the running streams of water that soaked the earth.

Poor drakelings, she thought to herself. I understand your pain of losing your family. You're safe now.

"For now I will call you Soel and Nyx, little ones."

She'll make it out, but she's never the same; she's looking down at the scars that remain

"Intruders?" Kanjiru pricked her ears at the mention, seeming to bristle at the mere thought of a drake challenging her in her homeland.

"Relax one moment Kanjiru, I have no clue if they were here for ill intent. In fact, they seemed to be searching for something." Pondering for a moment, the drake collected herself onto her hinds and began to think. What could be so important that these drakes would risk themselves in this kind of weather in a strange territory?

"Perhaps... the hatchlings?" Tilting her head to the side, she took in the appearance of the hatchlings once more. "But these are skydancer hatchlings... and those two most definitely weren't skydancers."

She sighed, giving up on the possibility of decoding the intentions of these drakes without confronting them personally.

"I'm going to go out looking for them again now that the hatchlings are safe. Please take care of them, Kanjiru." Wordlessly Orpheus and Odysseus rose to flank her at either side. She was grateful for their warmth; she would need them in case things came to a battle.

Without a second to hesitate, the dragons took off once more into the raining night sky.

But you hold your ground when your kingdom's in flames

It was a terribly foggy evening despite the rain and Ariadne found herself doubting they would ever find the drakes in this kind of weather, but what if they could be behind the missing dragons in her flight? She would never forgive herself if she let such an opportunity to find the truth slip through her talons.

"Ariadne, perhaps we should head back. It's so hard to see that if I didn't know where I was going I might've flown straight into a tree by now." Odysseus grumbled; admitting defeat was not his forte, but even his tenacity had finally met its match.

"We can't, not when there's a chance we could find out something. We must push forward--" Ariadne spoke with a tone of finality, but as if a gift sent from the heavens the drakes they were searching for burst through the mist ahead of them.

The trio and duo locked eyes simultaneously, both immediately stunned in their flight.

"Is this the last of the Skyflight?" The female of the two spoke up, flapping her wings a bit excitedly when her assumption was confirmed to be true with a nod from the Queen. "Look Alaris! I told you we would find them here."

Her male counterpart rolled his eyes but all they held was relief as he met the gaze of the Skyflight Queen.

"We've been searching for a week for your flight. Risa heard about your troubles and decided that we had to help." Alaris answered her wordless questions with ease. His tense form relaxed a bit as the hackles on her flight members began to lower.

"Your former flight members told us about the disappearances and our former flight faced a similar issue. We can't stand by and watch another flight get decimated."

"Did you ever find out what was causing it?" Ariadne hastily replied, a certain quality of desperation in her voice.

"Well, not exactly..." The drakaina replied morosely. Ariadne's hopes fell and matched the look of dejection in her visage.

"But that doesn't mean we can't help."

"Does this mean you're looking to join our flight?" Orpheus spoke, filling in the role of second in command in Kanjiru's absence. His question was met with an eager nod from the female and a not-quite as enthusiastic murmur of agreement from Alaris.

"That's all I need to hear." Ariadne smiled hospitably as she flew to greet them. "You will always be welcome within my home."
