You approach the city of Dhune, taking note that much of it is now submerged beneath the sand. Some of the taller buildings still loom above ground, stone walls and clay roofing now sun-bleached and cracked with age. At the highest point of the city, a partially visible staircase leads upwards towards the palace. You can tell that this was once a place of unparalleled grandeur comprised of polished marble and inlaid with veins of gold. Inghinn leads you up the staircase and towards the extravagant archway that makes up the palace entrance. Inside, it appears that this place has already been visited by numerous explorers and bandits. Inghinn scoffs “many have tried to raid this kingdom after its fall, though only a fraction of goods has ever been recovered. Many of the items fabled to have existed here were never reclaimed and their whereabouts remain unknown”. Despite Inghinn’s skepticism, you explore the remainder of the palace. The floors are strewn with sand and your exploration of the upper chambers reveals several pieces of dilapidated furniture, but little else. The lower passages are largely buried underground and Inghinn lights several torches to illuminate the dark halls. You come across one hallway deep underground where the stone wall is irregularly dark and pockmarked where it appears someone previously had attempted to chisel it away. “Ah” Inghinn remarks, “this is where it was rumored that the city’s vault once rested, although no one has been able to find any tangible evidence that it existed outside of rumors. A few desperate bandits tried to break down the wall”. The Pearlcatcher shrugged “It doesn’t appear anyone was successful”. You sigh and turn to leave before spotting something shiny on the ground below. You lean to pick it up, noting that it appears to be a fragment from a simple golden band. There are several more littered about that your comrades pick up as well. You find it interesting that these bands, which appear to be made of solid gold, managed to evade detection from the eyes of previous bandits and thieves. As you turn to leave, Cantor notices something glowing faintly in the darkness of the tunnel. Approaching, it appears to be a moth that glimmers almost ghost-like as it flutters around an equally strange flower growing through a crack in the stone wall. It begins to follow, but your attention is suddenly pulled towards a low rumble that shakes the entire palace, silt falling from above as the stones around you shift. . . It appears to be coming from another part of the city and you rush from the palace to investigate. A sandstorm has now settled over Dhune and that roar comes once more from the tunnels.
