Biography

Orpheus - from the Greek "ὄρφνη" ("orphne") meaning "the darkness of night". The name of a tragic poet and musician in Greek mythology who ventured into the underworld to save his late wife, Eurydice. Though he succeeded in charming Hades with his lyre, and was allowed to lead his wife out of the underworld, it rested on the condition that he not look back at her until they reached the surface. Before he could return her to safety, his love and concern for his wife overcame him, and he glanced back at her, causing her to be drawn back to Hades.
