The shadows in the Tangled Woods cast long and vicious visors that mask the dreaded creatures within. Little light makes its way through the festering layers of this volatile Woodland and without its presence life struggles to renew - the remains left to be consumed by fungi that feast on decay. It's these vessels that keep visitors at bay, their putrid plumes spew out upon even the lightest of touch and infect you with a sickness that festers, soon leaving you hypnotized and losing the control of your actions to something else. The cause of this hostile barrage is two dragons known for their lust of power and control. Entrapped in the Tangled Woods by the limits of their power and never permitted to leave the area. Their magick ensnared by an ethereal net, blanketing their entire domain. Now they see a way out.. As the magical barrier begins to weaken they send forth their kin into the unknown.

HISTORY

A lone dragon's egg hatches slowly. Each break against the hard exterior was a struggle, as if the shell had turned to stone and the membrane below tightening its coil with each feeble push. A great heave finally broke the youngling free, triumphant the exhausted dragon peered out from it's egg but was greeted by nothing but cold and darkness. Remnants of another shell lay scattered on the nest - it's size dwarfing the little dragon, thankfully it seemed to have hatched some time ago. The night air hung still and completely silent and it became clear to the hatchling that he was all alone. Retreating back into the safety of his shell he curled up as small as he could hiding away from the world outside. But, a deep hunger grew within him and his belly rumbled painfully. The nest floor was splintered with spiked branches, sharp and dangerous, acting as guards to keep the young dragon at bay. The safety of his once complete egg seems more appealing now than ever. Looking around the dark nest he saw some half eaten mushrooms scattered between the sticks. The meal was deeply unpleasant, the stale shrooms were already half-eaten and dried to a leathery hard texture. Each bite filled his mouth with a bitter taste. He gorged himself hungrily eating every last morsel of the scraps but still he wanted for more. Looking back upon his home it began to dry into glass like shards. With the hostility of this nest consuming his once safe egg, he had no option but to leave and venture into the unknown world alone.

Slinking out from behind a veil of dead vines he was greeted by the Tangled Woods. The area would awake around him with each step conjuring shivering shakes excitedly bursting out in vast waves bringing the Woodland out of it's stupor. Dead mushrooms would respond by perking up brightly, renewed with new life they would release plumes of spores to the air. The sound of rustling branches molting their dead leaves and the whipping of thick vines grew overwhelming with each burst of movement that gripped this wretched place. It was this noise that caught the hatchlings attention, the darkness of the Woods was thick and even so the observant little dragon could see strange shadows creeping within shadows and noticed a creature stalking within them. From deep within this dark opened many bright piercing eyes appeared, and emerged slowly from the blackness were two skulking dragons. Creeping expectantly from their shrouded blanket they stopped to observe the dragon. "It appears to have hatched after all" hissed one's tongue. As the other responded "Yesss.. and our friends are excited by it's presence..." responded the other one, gesturing to the Woods. The young hatchling cowered at the sight of these creatures but felt ensnared by their gaze as if rooted to the very ground he stood on. The larger of the two dragons wrapped it's claws around the hatchling's stomach and lifted him to meet a set of swirling purple eyes. "Rejoice my dear!" the dragon exclaimed excitedly, "Our son is of our mind... Deep within him resides our magicks unkind.." The pale yellow dragon smiled a toothily sharp grin as her mate continued "Welcome, my son, no need to despair, your mother and I shall make you our heir.."

SUMMARY

After his parents realised their magick was passed down to Ghroth they took him in with the intent to nurture his natural abilities through training and refinement, so he could really grasp hold of the power and potential held within his inborn right. He spent all of his young life learning the breadth of his powers and how to utilise them, his parents did not anticipate that Ghroth would hold a different form of their magick and sought to use his special abilities for their own gain. Ghroth was gripped by his parent's stories of mourning and loss, how they were treated by their Clan and held prisoner within a small Woodland, unable to leave due to a powerful barrier that was cast to imprison them. How the others were the enemy, and so a sinister plot was hatched: with Ghroth not tied down by the magical barrier he could come and go as he pleased, his parents sent him out with a purpose to use his magick to reclaim their domain and release them from their prison...

DARK MAGICK

Historically, the magicks that infest the blood of Ghroth and his family is one of dark and sinister origins. It inflicts the host with mushrooms that grow from their scales and manes that release hypnotising spores causing all who fall victim to be trapped in a symbiotic system forever to act as a vessel for the host. These mushrooms spread overtime to the environment around them, expanding their hold and causing all who enter to lose their agency and become one of the many pawns of this realm. This magick, however, comes at a great cost. Those afflicted are unable to leave the boundary of their mushroom's hold. Therefore in order to gain some semblance of freedom are forced to continue to infest more environments.. Furthering the vicious dark cycle.

Ghroth's inherited magick is different from his parents, he is not chained to the small Woodland like they are and he is not bound to the symbiotic system the mushrooms create. He has true freedom, able to leave the Tangled Woods without consequence. The mushrooms that spread across the body can be easily manipulated at his will, proliferating into a cocoon that consumes him in a carpet of fungi and giving him the perfect camouflage when against trees or the Forest floor. This perfectly counters what is seen as his biggest disadvantage; his bright colours. Although he does have the ability to spread his magick it's for a short time only before the mushrooms wither and die, losing their spores and thus their ability to maintain themselves and control vessels. With this in mind he is given the mission to infiltrate the Swamps of Sornieth and look to entrance the leaders of powerful Clans to align their forces to free his parents from their imprisonment.
