Biography
Aurelius remembered.
He remembered the day life had been breathed into him - how the world's colors shimmered and danced before his wide eyes. How gentle talons had carefully embroidered final details onto his wings, and wrapped him up in a silken ribbon.
He could still see the wide smile, and hear the excited squeals of the young dragon whom he had been gifted to. After that, the rest of his days blurred together, all filled with bubbly laughs and warm sunshine and happiness, as his companion took him everywhere and told him stories.
It could have lasted forever. It should have lasted forever.
His dearest friend had just adorned him with delicate jewelry and a silky cloak, and laid the little plush gently on a shelf. She sighed, as she seemed to have been doing much more often recently, and crawled to her nest of blankets. Why did she seem so weak? Every day now she stayed longer in her bed, and never had the energy anymore to go on adventures. Aurelius waited, as he had done every night, for the morning to come and for a new adventure to begin.
The morning came, but his friend did not awaken.
She did not awaken when a larger dragon came into the room and gently shook her. She did not awaken when the dragon put a talon to her heart.
She didn't awaken when the dragon fell at her side and wailed.
Aurelius found that he could not remember much after that moment. The shriek pierced through his soul, and his consciousness spun into darkness. He wandered around the dark, empty space for an eternity, without a thought or purpose.
But one day, he felt a tug. It was gentle, and welcoming. He drifted towards it, and, slowly, his eyes filled with the first light he had seen in a long time.
Aurelius was back. He felt a claw brush across his wings, and a distinct giggle of happiness. Sunshine washed over his face, and he felt loved again.
A new friend. A new life.
This time, it would last.
