The angel's been gone six months when you decide the girl needs a real name. She introduces herself as your cousin when she goes into town and you've taken to calling her the brat to others. But you're tired of waking up and thinking today will be the day she leaves. You're always checking out the window to make sure her car's still at the front of the drive like a cherry on top.
You bring it up over coffee when she's still squinty-eyed and declawed.
Call me whatever, she yawns. I don't want to use my old name. S'not who I am anymore.
It doesn't have to be your old name. But we need something we can use around other people.
Maybe you can call me Destiny. Seeing as our meetin' was predestined or whatever.
Cringe.
You go back and forth on it for a few days. She offers names like Arson, Joanjett, and Killer because she thinks she's funny. You try names like Katy, Beth, and Pauline. She hates each one. Finally, you step out and see her Bentley winking at you in the sun.
Ruby.
What? She's busy critically eyeing some fresh, warty gourds.
Your new name. Ruby. Because...red, you know?
To your surprise, instead of wrinkling her nose like usual, she looks up with a slow-spreading smile. Ruby, she echoes and then clicks her tongue. Yeah, okay.
The angel's been gone five months and two days when an eighteen-wheeler pulls over on the side of your road. Two people step out and the truck pulls off again. Ruby eyes the figures as they lope up your drive. You let the rake drop and make your way over, wondering just who the hell you have to deal with now, arms crossed and brows heavy—just intimidating enough so they know you mean business.
When the dust clears and you're standing in front of them, close enough to see a teenage boy with messy hair and an old moth-worn sweater and a man in a long dark jacket, bright eyes, with his arms around you—when did that happen? When did you reach back around him, squeezing too hard as if juicing a lemon? When did he press his face against his neck as if to hide from the world?
When you pull back and look at him, he's freshly washed and cleared of dust. His skin is clean, like you were the splash of water after a dog day afternoon.
It's good to see you. Good to have you back.
His smile is the rising sun and you feel stupid looking at it.
