As the story goes...

Once there were two mischievous lightning spirits who played together in the thunderclouds.

They were forbidden from descending to the earth, but one day, heedless of the consequences, they did so.

They found themselves in beautiful forest of towering trees and ancient groves, filled with animals and birds and creatures of all kinds. They marveled at the peaceful, sacred place. How exciting!

Together the lightning spirits played in the Great Forest, laughing and running and setting sparks.

But soon the forest caught fire.

Flames too hot, a fire that burns to the ground. The kind of flames that leave only devastation.

And the forest burned.

And it burned.

And it burned.

Until there was only ash.

Even the soil was charred and the roots were killed.

The lightning spirits saw this and they wept. They touched the ground and held the ashes and saw that, through their carelessness, something wonderful was gone forever.

Ashamed of what they had done, the two bound themselves to mortal forms. Their fur took the colors of the forest and the pattern of the cinders. Their manes took the colors of the soot and the ash.

They inscribed a Golden Promise Spell upon themselves: that they must remain here to care for the forest as it regrows and to protect it forever after.

Hundreds of years passed. With time, the land healed.

The forest grew back, the birds and the animals returned. Now it is a peaceful and quiet glen, with deep shadowy thickets and sprawling green canopies and hidden glades of brilliantly colored wildflowers. It is not the same as it once was, but it is beautiful nonetheless.

Most say no one lives there. And yet, sometimes a traveler will catch sight of a pair of brilliant blue eyes watching them from the shadows, or a golden glow moving softly through the trees at night.

Lineage:
The Penance of Lightning
Written by MasterK

Their children take to the wind and carry the Golden Promise Spell. They travel the world to find more natural, peaceful places to protect. Children are Wind, Fire, Lightning, or Nature element, may be any breed, and have the Runes tertiary (Cinder primary preferred but not required). They may wear accents that cover their runes, but they're always there underneath.

Their children's children and later generations may inherit the Promise Spell. Those that bear inscribed runes of a brilliant orange-gold always do. They, too, are bound to protect natural and peaceful places. Those that carry runes of other colors may or may not inherit some aspect of the protective compulsion. Lineage claimers may be of any element, runes/firefly preferred but not required.

All descendants may discover, to their surprise, that they can use Wind, Lightning, or Fire magic in addition to their born element. However, they must use their powers to protect nature or else all their magic will be lost.
