Biography

Nyx and Erebus met Iocastus as hatchlings, when the clan had a much different face. At the time, the practice of buying and selling dragons as mates and guards was commonplace. Nyx, a suitable dragon, was bought for the old leader, Aeolus, near the same time the Erebus was purchased as the then Prince Iocastus's guard.

Things can change in an instant. In the death of the old clan, the three young dragons found themselves at the head of a confused rabble. Though Iocastus had been intended as prince, he was deep in mourning after the death of his parents and siblings and in no place to rule. Erebus, though fiercely loyal to Iocastus in a way Nyx then could not understand, was no more suited than Iocastus, and Meek, though the oldest member and lasting founder to the clan, had since Iavana's early exhaltation grown jaded and disinterested.

And so Nyx became leader to the clan. With Iocastus's support, the clan members warily trusted her, and soon found that her hard-headed, independent, no-nonsense character was exactly what they needed. While some grumbled to be led by a water dragon of all things (and one who mated Erebus, a light dragon) those voices quickly seemed to disappear. To vanish. You might say... to die out.

During her rule, the clan first recovered, then began to prosper. Dragons from all walks of life joined the clan, and between them the clan was soon bursting with hatchlings. Though most would quickly leave to find their own clans, the lair was nearly always full, and ever expanding. The hoard was well-stocked, the dragons well-fed, and the Shadowbinder's approval seemed to reach the whole clan, Shadowborn or otherwise.

There were also struggles. No matter how long she ruled, there were always those who would go to Iocastus first, who would grumble that she, a mail-order water mate, was hardly suited to lead. Though Erebus, now as loyal to Nyx as he was to Iocastus, would deal with those who would not fall into line, there is only so far force can go before it comes back at you with double strength. Force cannot cure gene plagues or mend broken hearts. And it cannot make your citizens love you.

Despite her character and conviction, Nyx began to find that it was hard for her to maintain the passion she'd started with in solving the crisis into the peacetime she had created. Several of the dragons that had been loyal members, supporting her reign, moved on from the clan, either to seek their fortunes or to join the Shadowbinder. All but two of her many children had left her. And Nyx, though proud of the peace, yearned for the days when she, Erebus, and Iocastus had taken to the coliseum, doing their part to hold back the beasts of the world.

It was Iocastus who finally convinced Nyx to step down. Aarin, though unlikely, had been born under fateful blessings, and it was time to equip the clan with a peacetime ruler. Nyx shed her skin and took up a hood, and it quickly became unspoken law that none would teach of her rule to the new hatchlings, who she, in a new life, took to guiding through their first steps in the coliseum.
