TW: BLOOD AND VIOLENCE

The sounds of claws clinking against scales and the smell of blood along with the already circling vultures made Autumn feel nauseous. He whirled around and bared his sharp coatl fangs at everyone on the opposite side of the battle. He felt weight on his right side and twisted to face the attacker, but the other dragon kept him pinned down. They had light green scales with a tint of blue and dark blue blood that was dripping from her slashed cheek; it mingled with the red blood also dripping from her sharp rows of fangs.

The lily-pad green dragon opened her jaws for a killing bite, but Autumn slashed her exposed under-belly while snarling. Another dragon, one from his side pounced on the dragon and ripped her wings, not even noticing Autumn. Quick as a flash a dark green dragon—or a shadow bit the green dragon’s heel. Her fangs were sharp and long and they turned an inky black when they injected poison into the dragon’s heel. The green dragon jerked away, but when blood leaked out of the cut it was a black; a black that you probably would find in an infinite void.

The dark green dragon had shining, polished scales that had dirt and dried blood on them but still were as glistening as sunlight on the ocean. She had one antler on the left side of their head, the other horn was cut off and a bandage was wrapped around it.

“Viper!”

Viper whirled around and flashed Autumn a smile. She opened her mouth to talk but hesitated and checked the sky.

“If you have anything to say, make it quick.”

“Oh, um—“

He was cut off. A pale blue dragon with a scar on their snout swung out their tail and tripped Viper. The dragon had blood-soaked scales and long whiskers. Their left wing was a torn, burnt mess and they had a dark blue semi-transparent star-silk veil covering their left eye. It was odd, because it could limit sight and was easy to trip on or get tangled in. It also prevented quick movements.

“Her name is Viper? How fitting, I mean she is a lying snake!” They spat out the last word like rotten carrion.

“Lying?” Autumn started, trying to figure out how to use the veil to his own advantage while distracting the dragon with words.

The veiled dragon gave him a smile and snapped Viper’s neck. Her whole body tensed and shook as her eyes glazed over and she died. After that her body was still, her breathing not shallow but totally gone, like a ghost. Autumn didn’t have time to react properly. I mean he noticed the flames before the word was said.

“FIRE!” A dragon screeched, too far away to tell what side they were on.

“SHADOW-ELEMENT DRAGONS, RETREAT!”

“Light element dragons, back down!” That voice was fainter than the ones before, but still loud.

The flames were coming.

Autumn sprinted, breathing heavily before flapping his wings and flying into the sky. Dragons were taking flight, ones who couldn’t fly were abandoned, not even helped because the others thought they wouldn’t make it that far before the flames consumed them. A dragon bumped into his left aching wing, and his head was already spinning, so without any further warning Autumn plummeted from the sky. When he reached the ground his right wing broke with a satisfying snap. Before he knew it, his world enfolded into darkness.

Everyone thought that the dragon just bumped into him, but the dragon pierced a spear in his heart after he fell. A spear tipped with black poison, like an abyss tear of the dark.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I like a sad ending.
